Stepping out of the rain, I enter the flower shop. It's clean enough, I suppose. A sort of retro feel surrounds it. A mousy lady with large glasses and a smile stands behind the counter.

The owner knows my face, and calls out to me before I can speak.

"Ah, Evid! It's your anniversary, isn't it? I''ve got the usual bouquet ready in the back. I'll only be a few moments." She ducks into the back room, leaving me standing there. I would say it was rude of her to hold a one-sided conversation, but I don't like talking much, so it's win-win for me.

There's.. Something up against the wall to my left. It's hard to focus on it, so I don't. I'm just here for the flowers, after all. I can't miss my anniversary. Not again.

I don't have a mistress. If I had one, I'm sure Amelia would have found out, and then that would be the very brutal end of Evid Corte.

Something's changed, but I can't tell what. For some reason, I feel an compulsion to keep looking straight forward, and keep my hands firmly in my pockets.

Yes, I am rather proud of my mustache, and-

BUT OH SHIT WHAT IS THIS

Even though I said I started to understand, it's more like I just started to understand why I didn't want to look. As for what I' looking AT.. Well.

It appears to be some sort of robed figure, but even that is a dubious observation. For one, it has no visible arms, and its legs project at odd angles, as though they weren't required.

The figure silently pushes forward into my face, and sweat begins to trickle down my mustache as I peer into the void. By all accounts of light and physics, I SHOULD be able to see what's inside his hood, but it's obvious those things do not seem to apply here. Light dances over it in a way that light should not, and it is very hard to focus on it. Just trying makes my head hurt immensely.

I want to step back now, but some force keeps me standing still, unmoving. The figure begins to speak, now- or, at least, I think it's speech that I'm hearing. It sounds like the whistling of wind, awkwardly altered to mimic a voice. But the words are discernible, despite this, and I listen, sweat pouring down my face as if I were still in the rain.

>Eeevid Coorte. Why do you not?

It stops there, and I gather it wants a response, though I hardly understand the question. What should I say?

I asked a question, inside my head. "What should I say?" I suppose it was rhetorical, and I was just asking myself. But I was answered by someone else. You. Voices, whispering, inside my head. It was then that I realized you've been with me for a while now, and I just now become aware of you.

Must be the stress. It has to be. I can't be crazy. It'll screw up my anniversary! I suppose you're just the product of a fevered mind looking for ideas.. So I suppose I'll follow your advice.

Look, lay off me! I would consider myself grateful if I was a voice in someone's head, and if that someone actually LISTENED to me I'd be THANKFUL! Besides, you're not gonna be here long, hopefully, so if you.. If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all!

>Eevid Corte. Remembeeer.

>A star fell burning. I can tell you no moore.

>If I could.. I wooould. But I caaan't, so I wooon't.

The wraith hobbles towards the door. I consider stopping it, asking it what it's talking about.. But from what it said, it really can't tell me anything more, and I'd rather not talk to it any more than I have to. Before I started talking to it, I was ordering flowers. Now I'm arguing with voices in my head, and that same head is hurting more than it's ever hurt before.

I graciously open the door and usher it through.

>We wiiill meeet again, Eevid. I hope thaat you maay answeer my queeestion then.

You're right. I'm sorry. The first place a man should be a gentleman is inside his head. Also, the wraith is gone, and you're still here, which means you'll probably be around for a while, and it won't do to have constant fighting in my mind.

But, honestly, I need some whiskey. I think I'll just-

"Oh, Mr. Corte, I'm sorry for the wait, it's just- Dear me! You're as pale as paper! What's happened to you?"

The owner of the flower shop returns, holding the bouquet I ordered as an apology / anniversary present for Amelia.

I'll keep it in mind.

Alright, I'm done at the flower shop for the better part of a year, so now I'm free to do a few things before I go see Amelia. I'll list the buildings on this street:

The Church of Split is a two-faced organization that I don't like to go near. I've heard it's very.. Polarizing,

Flo's Flowers is where I just came from. No real need to go back there.

Johnny's Pub is a stunning example of pubbishness. Mostly just a place to drink, drink, and do karaoke. I do hear they've installed some entertainment machines, though.

For the record, my vote's on the pub, but if you get loud enough, I might change my mind.

So, got any better ideas?

Well, the rain's started again, and you guys are oddly silent, so I'll just go with the pub, then, shall I?

As I start forward, a patron of the establishment bursts out, obviously drunk, but very happy. He appears to be winding down from a karaoke session.

"I wanna BE with you and make BELIEEEEVE with YOOOuouou!" he trails off, warbling in his off-key voice, and stumbles down the street away from me.

I think I do need to keep this quick.

I've entered the pub. It's got a sort of bamboo feel to it.

The owner and bartender, Johnny, stands behind the bar. His head can barely be seen over it, and his glasses cover his face like a mask.

To the side is the entertainment machine I've heard about. It's got a holographic screen, with a.. It looks like a ship's wheel in front of it? Odd.

It seems karaoke hours are over, and the pub's closing up. I hurriedly call to Johnny to get some whisky ready to go, and wait.

Though it's rude, I check out of the corners of my eyes. His glasses are impractically thick, and his eyes can't even be seen through them. Must be some sort of fashion statement.

Johnny motions that my whiskey is ready, and I chug it down as fast as I can. It's getting late, now, and I need to see Amelia.

But perhaps I shouldn't.. Have.. It's hard to focus on Johnny, and it's starting to get hot.. I've had whiskey before, this.. This isn't..

I can hear a voice. It sounds like wind.

"May I recommend you try our ship simulator? It's free."

That sounds.. Like a good idea.

Hello, Amelia.

It's been another year, and all I can think about is how much I miss you.

I've tried to stay your gentleman, and do what I can to make the world a better place. But it's so much harder without you. Things are happening that I don't understand, and I can't do anything about it.

I wish you were here, to tell me what to do. But you're not.

I'm still training to go into space, but I think I'll make it, soon. And I'll be sure to paint your name in the stars, like I promised. And even though you never got to see it, I'll make sure everyone will remember you when they look up at night.

And I'll always be here, this day, every year. And you'll always have another bouquet, like I promised.

And I'm sorry.

I'm sorry I wasn't able to beside you on our anniversary. I'm sorry, I'm so sorry.

I'll never forget you again, Amy.
