I look up to see Zebble standing on a tree branch.
>"I'm afraid mister Ath isn't in the proper mental state to properly explain the terms of our contract right now, so allow me to clarify his... predicament.
>If you haven't noticed, Ath is a changeling. Blessed, or cursed, depending on your view, with the ability to alter his appearance at will. Not with a spell or incantation, but simply by observing another being. It's a special, unique gift that, by your own code, Miss Shylton, marks him as a mutant fit for execution. Ath tries to hide it, but when emotions swell up he sometimes can't control it, and experiences an unexpected change in appearance. When the innkeeper at his town discovered his true identity, he blackmailed him, threatening to reveal him to the town and condemn him to the same fate he had faced his whole life. He would be Persecuted. Prejudiced. Threatened. You see, Ath was... tired of the threats. He wanted to stand up for himself, but no matter who he became he simply lacked the backbone to retaliate. And that's where I came in.
>Ath asked of a simple favor for me. He wanted me to give him the strength to strike back. He wanted me to give him the ability to make sure no one ever threatened him again. And so I did- whenever Ath is threatened... Well, he is compelled to fight whomever issued that threat to the death. Even if they run, he gets their scent. He has no choice but to chase them until they, or he, is dead. I made Ath unable to be pushed around, stripped him of that fear that caused him to flee conflict. No longer constricted to his morals, Ath finally killed the innkeeper that had been threatening to out him and hid his body in the woods. Yes, Ath was a man at last... until he realized he had never set the terms of what threats he lashed out at. He managed to keep his changes under control just long enough to find a bride, but when she too discovered that he was a changeling, she naturally threatened to leave him and… well…
>It’s all been downhill from there. He fled his village, bloodied sword, until a town caught him and, when he refused to explain why his sword was bloodied, stuck him in the stocks for the paladins. Only after he was released did he realize that the town has threatened to allow the Paladins to kill him, and my terms forced him to slaughter them all. As he fled the town once more, he came face to face with a would-be bandit who he promptly decapitated and dragged through the woods, hoping someone would find the trail and… help him.
>And now, with that clarified, let us get to the real issue here… which one of you will be paying to replace my suit?”
