Best place to start with your magic-learnings would be spells that enhance what you're already good at. Ones that make you faster, stronger, or even ones that would alter your dragon breath, or at least make it burn your throat less.

Also, divination. It might help you gather information on the crystal without having to ask people that may want it for themselves.

First check your magic book for warnings about blood magic. If they can do some Low Fantasy-type stuff to you via your blood, that's bad.

You need to start with terminology, then move up to understanding how magic exists/works with the enviroment.

And if my Fantasy Genre experience means anything, there should be places where the leylines are closer to the surface, or intersect, so that'll probably be an easier place to start training when the time comes, since the magical power would be more accessible.

Healing magic. We already have our breath weapon for "offensive magic" and we can save friends in trouble with healing magic.

Being able to sense magic should eventually become as simple as hearing us, and hopefully more useful and pleasant.

Everything except illusion, if something goes wrong there you just trip balls for a few moments then everything goes back to normal.

Illusion is fun. Enchant 5 pieces of armor with 20% Chameleon for permanent invisibility so long as you wear all pieces. Rings and necklaces work too.

In fact, try to learn Illusion and Enchanting. The two safest magics, and still useful. Unless you enchant a ring that sets you on fire and cannot be removed by accident... oh well, great gift for an enemy.
