No useful suggestions right now, but I do have a theory. There are two possible approaches to explain this freaky mask thing.

1. It's magic or something else equivalently inexplicable.

2. It's interfacing with our mysterious 'implants' and making us hallucinate the changes that we're seeing. (Still a bit shaky because of the camera involvement, but possible.)
