Casey glares at the stone until a connection fires in her synapses. “It’s a heartspace gate, isn’t it? You want us to put it on the moon!”
“Mmhmm. Bingo.” Argus nods.
He takes out a comb and holds it up. Looking in the mirror, he finds his hair immaculate as usual and points at himself with an air of amused satisfaction. “Part of me wishes I could ask to join you on your trip, but a werewolf on the moon?" he shakes his head and continues, "Its too dangerous. Being that close to so much power would probably tear me apart.”
“But you’ll have a permanent gateway to the moon, right? You could get all the moon rocks you want!” Casey accuses, “You’d still be basically unstoppable!”
“Well, that would be true except for two things.” Argus holds up a pair of fingers. “For one: a heartspace gate has to be opened from the outside. Not sure if anyone ever mentioned that to you before, but it's one of the reasons they‘re only given to people that a fey trusts. Once it’s up there, only someone on the moon can open it.”
“Okay, what’s the other reason, then?” Kol asks, putting the heavy stone down and rubbing his hands.
“The other is… and I’m a bit embarrassed to admit this: I don’t entirely know what will happen if it’s opened that far away.”
“What?” Casey cocks her head in disbelief. “You don’t know?”
“Fey magic is dictated by rules and agreements and precedents. There’s no precedent for something like this.” He shrugs, looking at the mice with naked honesty. “Our magic is different from mortal gates and isn’t fixed to one spot, but…”
His head does a little anxious wobble back and forth as he explains, “You’d be opening a gateway into part of me. I don't think it'll be entirely easy or painless. If it was, I’m pretty sure that the guy you’re trying to rescue wouldn’t be stuck up there in the first place.”
