One day a human priest comes walking through Yon’s territory and the hare leaps at the chance to talk to him.

“Have you and the other humans captured God?” Yon asks.

“Of course not. God is perfect and infinite. He lives in heaven, a realm outside our reality.”

“How do we know about God then? Does He ever visit?” Yon asks.

“Yes, He had a son who died for our sins. It was documented in this book, along with how we can embrace the son’s teachings to earn our way to heaven.”

That makes sense to Yon. He asks the priest to make him fit for heaven and is gently dunked in the nearest stream.

“Now try to live without sin. Do not hesitate to ask for the Lord’s help in prayer.” The priest tells him, before setting Yon on the grass.

“When will I reach heaven?” Yon asks.

“Your soul will go to the warmth of God once your mortal body passes.” The priest walks away.

How should Yon live?

The priest said the book tells you how to reach God. We should ask him about that next time we see him.

Also, what do you know to be sin? Let's do things that are not that.

Well the priest made you ready for Heaven, said to live without sin. Therefore, the way you lived before was sinful, so do the opposite of that.

Organize winter survival plans with some other hares and work together. Helping others is a good thing in God's eyes.

Yon has many more questions about what is a sin, but the priest does not turn back. As his wet fur dries in the sun, Yon decides to live a modest life, which is what he was doing already.

Through the winter Yon keeps to himself, which is the way of the hare. He nibbles bark and buds from the bushes and sits in a little scrape in the snow drift.

As spring approaches, heavy thoughts of mating and she-hares enter his mind. Is this sinful?

It is only sinful to be disloyal to your mate.

Since it is necessary to get more bunnies, it would be strange for it to be sinful. As long as you give as well as you take.
>>

It is natural to reproduce. It would be sinful to obsess over it, perhaps. Perhaps it would be easier to think of virtue rather than sin; you can be humble, brave, compassionate, honest, just, honorable, giving, and faithful. Though maybe bravery isn't always a virtue for a prey animal.
Humility can be applied to many things to moderate your actions and keep you grounded. Like in this case.

Yon is troubled, confused. Hares are polygamous and mate with whoever they please without regard for past encounters, which seems sinful. But if it is not a sin as long as it is for reproduction, that would mean his thoughts are indeed sinful. Perhaps he can balance the bad with his modest actions? How much humility and virtue is enough to redeem him?

To sin would be to treat this fellow rabbit, your kin and equal, like some kind of sex dispenser... or lunch.
So... leave. Either earn your right to mate, or wait for a rabbit to approach you.

Yon wants. Yon is ashamed he expects sex from the jill, the moment he sees her. Mating with her would be a sin but it is what he would like more than anything in the world.

“I’m sorry.” He blurts out.

“What for?” The jill asks. “Would you like to chase me?”

“Yes, but then I’m afraid I won’t find God.”

Well - this seems like it furthers the cause of reproduction. You also happen to desire it. I do not think the desire is inherently sinful; this built-in desire is likely how God ensured the hares' continued survival. I think, rather, virtue comes by being careful with such things, maintaining control, giving them their proper place and refraining when harmful; and sin comes by letting these strong emotions become your primary focus, giving them unchecked control of your actions perhaps causing you to do harm or do things you will regret. In monogamous species this might look like chastity and fidelity, but as you say, hares aren't monogamous. What lies before you seems like what hares are SUPPOSED to do. My only concern is with the "do harm or do things you will regret" clause - how does the future look? Last year was poor, does this year seem better, or worse? If you contribute a litter of leverets, will that cause more to go hungry?

He doesn’t know if this area can support more hares. That matters little as the jill lets Yon reach her. She bats him once with her paws then turns around to let him mount her.

Wondrous pleasure! They play and scamper and mate again, several times.

They part for the last time and the jill scampers away. Yon might not see her again in his short life.

Cold doubt rushes to fill the space and Yon slinks back to cover. Did he ruin his chance to find heaven? What other base desires could he rationalize in a moment of weakness?

He is very alone. He has been alone since his mother left him.

Remember, the priest said to pray for guidance. Look to the heavens, listen to the winds.

Look at it this way, if God has specific rules he expects to be followed he would make them explicitly clear. It would be unmitigated cruelty to make sinning a guessing game.

Did you forget? You have no indication whatsoever that what you did was a sin. You don't know what is considered a sin or not. You can reasonably assume that immoral actions are sins. Selfish behavior, unnatural behavior, heretical behavior. You are a hare. What did God create you to do, do you think? God did not give you religion. You are not expected to know what religious sins are.

You are expected to be a good example of your species. If you want to be favored in the eyes of God, then be a Good Hare-- do what a hare is supposed to do. Eat grass, reproduce, don't get eaten, that sort of thing. Add nightly prayers on top of that to show your faith.

Yon remembers the priest’s advice and decides to try to pray. He shuts his eyes and focuses on his gratitude for being a healthy hare, blessed to experience the wind and bountiful grass. He mentally apologizes for his sins , known and unknown. Finally, he asks for the grace and wisdom to be a better hare in the future.

Should Yon be satisfied or should he keep searching?

Well, you wanted to meet God, and you haven't, yet, right? Though I guess your original phrasing was "find God" - do you feel you've found God, or do you want to meet him face-to-face? And are you willing to wait until death for that to happen, or do you want to try to find him before then?

Yon rests in the grass. He still has worries but he feels less anxious now. As long as he prays, keeps God in his heart, and continues his humble life, Yon is confident he will reach the kingdom of heaven. He has found the eternal love of God in himself.
