I’m Carlos Acoste… Son of General Steven Acoste. I’m 21, soon to be 22 years old, I’m native and currently living on New Stockholm-3, within the Azure Alliance.

I Recently graduated from the Miraborg Academy of Military Science, achieving the rank of Sub-Lieutenant. As is tradition… I spent most of yesterday celebrating and drinking… and now I’m paying for it with a headache… Some dizziness and an extremely dry throat…

Now… if this headache would recede… I might be able to think of what to do next…

I… Specifically went through the trouble reducing my “knockers”. I still don’t feel like going back in that.

From what I been told, it used to be “Acosta”, But due to some problems with paperwork a long time ago, it was changed, and my Great great-grand parents were too lazy to change it back, so it stuck…
I guess it could have been worse, heard even worse last names out there.

Of course not! My family has a… relatively speaking, long tradition of serving with… relative distinction! Like sure, we never actually did anything THAT noteworthy as some others have… but we have always been working in the favor of Azure Alliance and all its worlds and people.

Ah… that’s the formalwear for officers, used for celebrations and the sort. I only got to use it like once or twice, last time was yesterday, on the graduation ceremony. Soon after, I came back here to change to my backup uniform, because I knew I was going to get trashed in the… “after party”. I didn’t want it to get stained. I still needed to get the rest of the uniform framed, but I liked the top more... a Shame I don't get to use it that often.

Yeah… I remember those fantasies as a child. It was fun, even on some videogames. At this point in time though, I feel like I’m good. I don’t think the life of a pirate would do well for me.

Since I’m already sending you this message, I figured I should take the opportunity to inform you that you should now have an assignment waiting for you at command. I won’t be giving you much details over a voice message, but I can assure you it will be an off-world assignment, so I’d recommend taking some time to calmly look into your things and figure what to take with you. Don’t worry much about the rest, someone will take care of sorting everything out, and your room will be given to someone else.”

Well, that’s to be expected… I didn’t hear there were many spots available here in New Stockholm.

Crab, crab, crab! Alright. I can reach the office in… 10… maybe 20 minutes… that gives me some time to do other stuff! But I don’t have time to shower! And I smell horrible!

Agh! Deodorant will have to do!

I have two socks but one of my boots is missing. I don’t have times to find my missing boot so I’ll have to use the other pair I have…

Most likely I won’t be coming back here for a long while… maybe while on leave I’ll come back and visit… although many of my friends are probably going to be off somewhere else in their own assignments.

Alright… What I was wearing last night is nowhere near presentable, too many stains from different sources. I’ll have to just have to improvise and mix my uniform and my backup stuff…

As I said, that was to be expected… there aren’t many assignments available within the New Stockholm system, other than the local garrison and militia. And while I take pride in my accomplishments, I wasn’t necessarily top of my class… specially the last year…

I heard a rumor that the alliance might also be getting ready to properly secure the periphery colonies and finally have some proper presence there, rather than the few patrols and militias… of course, all I have is rumors… and it could very well be true, and still be on the planning phase…

That’s a possibility… Though most likely he learnt of my assignment, and decided to take it upon himself to let me know of it, as an excuse to just congratulate me… he… always did things that way…

Since he’s a general, way up in the ladder, and he’s my father too, it’s possible that to avoid conflicts he’s trying to stay away for the time being, and let the chain of command do its thing… I already had some troubles with some of my classmates being suspicious of me and my relationship with someone so high up.

Granted, I’m not the only one who had ties and history with the military… but I still remembered the rumors, which all seemed to be targeted towards me specifically...

… Ok, shirt check, trenchcoat… beret… insignias… yeah everything seems to be in order… Just need to wash my face on the way out and I should be good… what time is it?

… Alright… after quickly walking my way through the whole campus… dodging other cadets leaving their class and rushing to the next… and other recently graduated cadets seemingly crowding towards the offices of their respective superiors… I finally managed to get here… and seemingly in good time! I still have… about 5 minutes until 09:00… That should give me some time to take a breath…

… Now I do find it a bit weird that so many other graduates are at the door to my superior’s office, Colonel Santios… Even my friend Kadmian is here, browsing through his pad, seemingly waiting for something… Now, the only reason I can imagine for so many of them to be here, is that they haven’t gotten their respective assignment yet… Maybe I had more time that I initially thought…?

Ah, luckily this isn’t a Murrian academy… There, they do have a tendency to fight for better assignments I heard. But if we had to… Well, I’d like to see THEM outperform MY gunslinging skills!

“OH Hi… ahem. Sub-lieutenant Carlos. I was just waiting for you.” He says moving away from his pad and turning to face me. “Got something for you. Figured I better give this back to you before we are shipped off to wherever we are going after today!” He says as he begins looking through his pockets.

“W… What?” And before I can say anything else, he brings out a small, brand new, bottle of perfume, placing it in my hands.

“Yeah. It was really good; I’ll be recommending it to some of my friends. They REALLY need it.” He said giving me one more wink.

“Oh, right… thanks.” I… Don’t smell THAT bad… right…?

“You are welcomed.”

“Well, yeah. Today everyone was to report back here at different times to be briefed on where they would be assigned to. Everyone was originally given different times to report.”

“Then why are so many of the graduates of our group here still?”

“Isn’t it obvious?” He said with a little laugh. “Many arrived late, and there are some that are still no-shows yet. So, Colonel has been working with us as we arrive… and there have been some delays…” He brings out his PAD again, and looks “I think part of the delay, had to do with a rescheduling of those times… On top of the whole briefing themselves, which probably take longer than anticipated with some.”

“Oh! Right. I don’t need to imagine. I got my assignment already.”

“You did?”

“Yep! As you know, the early bird gets the meal. I knew some of our comrades would be arriving late, so I just decided to show up early. Since people were arriving late, the Colonel decided to give me my assignment while waiting for others. Pretty neat huh?” He said with a proud smile.
“I see… So, what’s the assignment?”

“Hmmm, So, Long story short, they are planning on sending more support towards the outward colonies and settlements, both in personal and materiel, and as such, they are expanding all the logistics there. I’ll be heading to a new supply warehouse that was under construction on the Aoemi Sector. I’m going to be overseeing the situation, and will probably be stuck there, reviewing papers and requests, and ensuring all the needed things go where they are supposed to go.”

“Oh. That makes sense. Logistics had always been your thing. And the guys at the warehouse seemed to appreciate you.” And it seems there was some truth to those rumors after all.

“Yeah. Might not be a flashy or adventurous job, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.”

“Wait… Why are you still here then? Shouldn’t you have been transported out of system?”

“Of course! There was just a bit of an inconvenience. I was supposed to be joining the A.W.S. Commander Rakhaa, that was going to be making a stop there leaving some supplies. But it seems like it had some technical problems, so they are docked until they get those sorted out… Whatever it was must have been big, ships grounded for the day, until they get everything fixed.”

“Oh.”

“Yeah, luckily that gave me time to come here and see you. I’m kind of curious what kind of assignment would you get, Hot-shot”

“Well, I don’t know what to expect really… I might be sent to one of the patrols, to keep an eye on ground squads. Or maybe to some regiment to watch over some new recruits.”

“Hmmm… Well, if there is something I learnt of our friend Delma, is that you should always keep an eye, and ear, open- There have been a lot of interesting ships moving in system, even more than there usually are. Maybe one of them seems familiar?” He says, pointing at my pad pocket, under my overcoat. “Oh! And before I forget! If nothing else, you should look into your PAD, particularly your profile.”

“Why is that?”

“Heard some of the other graduates. Apparently, the system didn’t update their profile with their new rank, which was problematic when trying to get it to update with the new assignment. More of a minor annoyance really, but better get it out of the way now.”

Right… And since there is some time to kill, I guess I could try to just relax a bit now… maybe look for more info on my pad… or just talk Kadmian a bit more. Unknown how often I’ll get the chance, now that we’ll likely be going our own separate ways.

The Outer colonies Current situation

The colonies, that had been a point of pride of the Alliance, as the first cooperative project between all members of the Alliance, had been for the most part abandoned in the last decades, as the Alliance focused their resources less in exploration and expansion, and more on reconstruction after the war.

The colonies had been left mostly to fend off by themselves, with only token assistance as essential supplies were delivered, or through different patrols that ensure the safety of the colonies, at least against larger threats. The colonies themselves though, quickly saw themselves regressing to lower industrial and technological levels, many colonists abandoning their homes and moving to the edge worlds as refugees. The most affected of these were the few colonies that had just began growing at the start of the war, the ones who made first contact with the Baktre Hegemony, and as such found themselves in the middle of the war.

While the reconstruction took most of the Alliance resources, the Alliance itself never abandoned the colonies, though this didn’t help the feelings of abandonment and resentment many of the colonies had towards the alliance itself.

Kadmian: “Ah, well, from what I gathered, before the war, the Aoemi sector, and the system of the same name, was an important hub connecting to several other sectors under colonization at the time. It became a meeting point for the colonists, and a supply warehouse to ensure the colonies would continue growing… It had to be evacuated and abandoned during the war as the Alliance was pushed back, but even then, the old warehouses soon became a sort of safe-house for the few that had to be left behind, both colonist and troops…

Now, those old warehouses were preserved, even once the rebuilding started. They are planning on making it a museum of sorts, about the war, and about the story of the survivors and refugees of that time. I’ll be working on some new warehouses and logistic depots that are being built in the same planet. Personally, I’m glad that’s the case, even if it would be more time and effort on my part… I’d feel weird stacking boxes in what used to be a home for people who lost theirs…”

Carlos: “… I think I’d like to visit that museum sometime. Whenever it opens.”

Kadmian: “Yeah, I imagined. Just let me know when you get some leave, and I’ll see if I can book you for a good tour. I feel the planet is going to be growing quite a bit in the coming years.”

That’s… a good idea… alright, I know Kadmian likes puns, they are quite popular among his culture… Maybe I can do something with that and socks…? Well, anyway I should start setting it up… Hopefully I can make something up as I go… or just keep it simple… he’d appreciate it either way, I think… And he has been a good friend through our days together. Him and Delma… I don’t think I could have made it this far without them, even with my father’s connections, advice, and my own personal reasons to want to enlist.

And just as I was about to continue, the sound of the door to the colonel’s office sliding open silenced everyone...

Col. Santios: “Alright! You got your assignment. Now Move it! We are behind schedule!”

The familiar yelling of our esteemed and clearly stressed colonel suddenly roars through the hallway, as one of my classmates rushes out of the office, I don’t even have time to tell who it was, as they ran through the hallway, presumably to do their final preparations before leaving the system.

Col. Santios: “Alright… how many more are there…?

He quickly takes a glance a each and every one of us. None of us speaks up.

Col. Santios: Good… Give me 5 minutes, I got a priority call. In the meantime, all of you stay here. Including you, Sub-lieutenant Kadmian, since it seems you have nothing better to do, you might as well hear the briefing since it will be concerning you as well.”

And without further explanation, he closes the door and a deafening silence fills the hallway.

Kadmian: “Heh… Well, this looks interesting. Delma doesn’t know what she’s missing.”

send Delma a text letting her know she has five minutes to get here. Probably won't do anything but it would be kind of funny to think she'll rush her out of breath thinking she was missing something important.
