There's a monster in the woods.

Tera's village has countless stories about it, stretching back generations. Nobody in the village remembers a time when the monster wasn't there, and none of them ever knew anyone that spoke of such a time.

There are whispers and rumors of every sort. When somebody disappears in the woods, the monster took them. Is the hunting season poor? It's the monster's hunger. Do travelers stop appearing for a season? Well, the woods are hazardous ... Novody knows how far the monster's territory stretches.

Tera grew up hearing the stories. She saw the crude effigy constructed in the village to ward the monster away. But while the stories frighten her, they are also exciting. The monster might be dangerous, but they do more than that.
Tera wants to see the monster.

It is supposed to glide effortlessly through even the densest woods. The stories meant to make it sound terrifying make it sound graceful, and powerful, and important.

So a few days ago, Tera packed up some things and slipped into the woods, hoping to find the monster. Yesterday, she realized that she was lost. Today, she found something.

But she is very certain this is not the mMonster she is looking for. Some manner of large beast lumbers through the woods, one which she has never heard of in any stories. She slipped into a hollow log to hide, but she can hear it sniffing loudly as it pushes through the trees, presumably trying to find her.

What should Tera do? Should she stay hidden, try to sneak away, try to run, or try to confront the creature? Or should she do something else?

Well, what did Tera pack? Perhaps there’s something that can help her.
If the monster is sniffing around, it might find her eventually, we might have to consider sneaking away, or playing dead. If the monster is strong enough, it might break that log to get to you even,

find a rock, toss the rock as far as you can away from you. Then hope the noise of the rock will lure the beast away and if it does, move in the opposite direction than where you threw the rock.

Confront the creature. It looks very soft and fluffy, like a bear. Perhaps it is also as friendly as one!

What were you expecting to find? Of all the aspects of the legend why assume assured death would be the part that was incorrect? For all you know everything else could be false and this beast you identify as something different could be the reality behind the legends.

For a more immediate concerns:
Your stalker seem heavy. Maybe you can climb faster than it. Just make sure you can reach from one tree to the other so you won't be cornered up there.

Got anything you can toss to make noise?
If not keep still

Well, animals that are hunting often get confused by things that don't act like prey.
So if it's hunting, then deliberately approaching it while screaming and being agressive might scare it off?

Agree on checking the inventory, we need to know what we have to work with.

For instance, if you have strong-smelling herbs or similar that could mask your scent, you may be able to throw it off. Otherwise you can't stay where you are, or it will find you eventually.

From the looks of it, this creature probably has poor eyesight, if it can see at all, which in turn likely means it has good hearing. So you want to sneak away, preferably with a distraction. I do like the idea of throwing a rock to lure it away.

Alternately, if we have the means to light a torch, we might do that. Most animals are afraid of fire.

Be very still.
Remember what you brought. No pack searching yet.
No noises.

Let's see... stay put for now? Probably easier meals to find than having to bust up a log. Find sharp branches or stuff to toss. Pain can also discourage so jabbing or stoning would help.

Tera considers throwing something, but there arent very many rocks in the woods and she doesnt have much left in her pack. She has:

Her camp blanket for sleeping in inclement weather. This won't throw very far or make a lot of noise. It will also make sleeping in the woods uncomfortable if she loses it.
Her cooking pan, which could go a decent distance and make a clanging noise if it hits something hard, but it is also the least replacable thing she has.
A sparking rod and a handful of pitch balls, which can be used to start fires with the assistance of kindling and tinder. Tera does not have any other tool or knowledge to start a fire without the sparking rod.
A small dagger. Tera does not have any practice fighting with a blade, she only has it with her to use as a knife. If she loses her dagger it will also prevent her from starting a fire, as she needs it to use the sparking rod.
A lump of wandering bread slightly larger than her fist. This bread has hardened in her pack and she doesnt like it very much. It is not far removed from a rock, but it is also the last remnants of the food she brought with her into the woods.

From the way the beast bulldozed through the brush and the crashing sounds Tera has heard, she is very certain that if the beast finds her in the log it will be able to bust it open. The log is a hiding place, not a shelter.

>>1117645

Tera does not assume any parts of the legend are incorrect! She knows all of the stories about the monster, which is why she is sure this beast is not the monster.

Tera considers confronting the beast, but isnt sure if confronting it passively or aggressively would be a better idea.

She can hear the beast getting closer, she isbout of time and will need to commit to a plan of action! What approach is the best for Tera to take to this situation?

Throw an Object (which one?) As cover to either sneak or run away
Sneak away
Run away
Hunker down and Hide
Use a tool
Confront the beast
Some other desperate plan

Its following your scent, and will see or hear you try to sneak far.
Best bet is to crawl our of the log and behind the nearest tree that will break line of sight. Then make a run for it

He's right. Its following your scent.
Crawling is a good idea so you can get a bit of forest on you to hide your smell.
Youre not stinky tera, as far as i know, but to a forest beast you stand out.

Sneak away, tracking you by scent isn’t very fast.
>>
No. 1117981 ID: adb177

What will it believe more? Eyes or nose? For eyes cover yourself with the blanket and it will never see you at all. For nose... got liquid? Wash off the smell? Give it no reason to break the log and it likely will not waste its limited energy on busting up a log.

Tera opts to slink through the mud and brush from the log, the crashing and sniffing keeps getting closer so she feels like it would probably find her.

She manages to get a little ways away from the log before standing behind a tree, and shortly after hears a loud cracking sound - it seems like the beast was able to tear open the log effortlessly. She is fairly certain the beast is not primarily hunting her through eyesight.

The beast sniffs the inside of the cracked open log, then stamps the ground impatiently and cranes its head upward to agressively sniff at the air.

Tera will need to decide if she wanta to try to find somewhere to hide, continue trying to sneak away, or try to run away through the brush

Good thing you didnt stay put.
Looks like its nose is good.
As long as you sneak faster than you reek you should be able to get some distance. Watch for noisy undergrowth.

Grab a random branch and throw it away from you, if the beast goes for it run in the opposite direction

Just keep sneaking away, just slightly faster. We don't know how good it's hearing is.
>>
No. 1118147 ID: 71a45d

Find a lake or river and use it to mask the scent it's following.
>>
No. 1118148 ID: 92f7e7

Yes, I agree that losing it at the water is our best bet. If you find the river and ford it, you should be able to break the scent trail. Maybe later, you can make a song for the river in gratitude.

Good call.
Water.
Enter, down or up river then exit after a bit.
Just need to make sure to keep our bag and firemaking stuff extra dry. Gonna need sone heat to dry out when we find a hidey hole.

Alternatively if we see something like a small cave or rock gap (i.e something we can fit it but the beast won't and is sturdy enough that it can't rip its way in) we should just go for that.

Fair point.
If we stumble upon one, worth checking out.

Keep sneaking away but look for something to throw as a distraction. Not your supplies.
