((This is a work-in-progress setting for 3.5 DnD, following Bardic Quest. I'll be stopping at various points to refine the setting and rules, and at these points, feel free to chip in.

>Creation and origin of the world
In the beginning, there were five spirits of living music.
Nysta, the beatific and happy.
Hrya, the melancholy and loving.
Oosa, the fun and joyous.
Farnle, the angry and loud.
and Sorfan, the Conductor.

Together they played in the void, happy to weave a song that went nowhere. But one day, Oosa made a suggestion.

"We have no audience for which to play. Our melodies go unrecorded and are fleeting. We should make an audience to play for, one that will dance and play and revel in our song!"

And Sorfon nodded sagely. He picked up his baton, tapped it twice, and lead the First Song of Creation. The world formed of the Void, soil springing from his conductor's baton as he wove unheard melodies and conducted the land itself. Water flowed next, filling the deep valleys and oceans of the world. He smiled at his creation, for it was indeed a work of art. A perfect sphere, without flaws.

And so he gave the lead to Nysta.

Nysta looked at the world, and while it was beautiful, it lacked color.
"Oh, but I cannot decide what color these wonderfully shaped lands shall be!" she fretted. "Oh, I know! I shall have them decide for me!" she said, and began to sing. So happy, so full of life was her voice, that plants grew where it touched. She sang as the world turned, blessing almost all of it with verdance and beauty save one place, which she delighed in at any rate for its beautiful golden sands. "How lovely it is!" she delighted, looking it over. "If it only had a name..." she shrugged and shook her head, and turned to Oosa, who smiled and walked up to the planet.

"Oh, this shall not do! Still we have no audience!" he huffed. "No matter, I shall create a splended array of tastes!"
And so he placed his bow upon his violin and played. So clever and witty was his song, that the animals that heard it rose and stretched and smiled and danced. The ones who danced were the Humans, the Elves, the Lizardfolk, the Dwarves, the Halflings. But others heard the song, and did not want to dance. Oosa pitied them, but gifted them, as well. The Kobolds, the Orcs, the Ogres, and myraids others did not join the dance, and while it saddened him, he knew that if they all liked it it would be no fun. He smiled, looking over the world.
"Yes, yes. This is fine. What do you think, Hrya?"

"I think it's... wonderful. Too wonderful."
She looked over the peoples, and they were too happy for her liking. "They know not the preciousness of their existence. Thier love is fleeting, for their lives are eternal, and love has no consequence."
So she too sang. So sad, so loving, so full of melancholy was her song, that one of the lands simply ceased to exist, and a town vanished from the world. People everywhere began to die, but it was not without hope. People found themselves falling in love that lasted, having children. And so Hyra was pleased, for without death, you cannot know the true beauty and fragility of life and love. And so Hrya turned to the last of their number, the great and boistrous Farnle.
"What do you think?" she asked gently, and was swept aside to make room.

"It's boring!" he roared, and pulled out his guitar. "Needs conflict! Anger! Rage! Blood and war!" he sang and played, and the peoples were incensed. They made war, drew borders, made pacts and broke them. Nations formed and cities rose and fell within years. It was an age of conflict and terror, a time of fear and desperation. But his song did not last forever. As it slowly died, he smiled. "That's better." he said. "I've had my peace. It looks great."

>Races in the world of Five songs
Humans are the only race to which all classes are available. There are four kinds of human: Savage, City, Noble, and Rural.

Savage humans are stronger than average, and have a greater fortitude. They are less capable and patient in society, though.
>+2 STR, +2 CON, -2 CHA

City humans are not neccesarily smarter, but are almost universally taught some sort of magic as they grow up, surrounded by wizards, sorcerors, and bards.
>+2 INT, Choose 1 0-level spell from any Arcane spell list. This can be used as a spell-like ability. caster level is based on character level.

Noble humans are born and raised in ivory towers and castles, distant from society as a whole. They are mentally trained to be great spellcasters, so that they may properly rule over the 'lesser people' and 'protect them'. Some Nobles in fact live up to this obligation, using their bearucratic power to help those below them. Most, however, do not.
>+2 CHA, +2 INT, -2 STR, +2 racial bonus to Diplomacy and Bluff

Rural humans live far and away from cities, but with more structure and civility than their barbaric savage brethren. They learn early on the power of money and a tight purse, and are hardy from their work in the feilds all day, every day.
>+2 CON, +2 STR, -2 CHA, +2 Racial bonus to Profession and +30 to starting gold

hurr

Dwarves are people of the earth, animated when Farnle and Oosa had a contest of song in a rocky chasm. Farnle's song gave birth to the Dwarves from the ore-filled boulders. They have eyes of gold, silver, or copper, and flesh of a stone similar to marble. Thir beards are similar to steel wool, and their blood is like very hot sand.
>+2 CON, +2 STR, Damage reduction 2/magic. This damage reduction increases by 2 every third level, capping at 10. Dwarves are always provicient with Axes, Maces, and military picks, regardless of class.

Halflings are cousins of the Dwarf. When Oosa and Farnle had their musical duel in the chasm, Oosa's song animated the loam and pebbles and jewels, giving birth to the Halflings. Halflings are nomadic, clever folk, who are happy to help others and just as happy to relieve them of their wallets. Thier philosiphy is that if one cannot keep an eye on their money, they do not deserve it, and the same generally goes for everything: Women, belongings, land, cities, and even kingdoms, the last resulting in a centuries-long fued with the Kobolds.
>+2 DEX, +2 CHA, +2 to pick pocket and bluff. Halflings also blend in with natural surroundings, allowing them a Hide bonus equal to their highest class level when in such terrain.

Elves are split between the children of Hrya, the romantic, poetic, artistic elves, and the children of Nysta, the happy, outgoing, and passionate elves. The two are always at peace and rarely squabble, united as they are against the constant encroaching of the Orcs and Goblin tribes on their massive forest.
Nevertheless, they are represented by the same stats:
>+2 DEX, +2 WIS, -2 CON, -2 STR
>All elves have proficiency with bows and longswords. All elves also start with a lvl 1 Song of their Mother Song.

Gnomes are Oosa's greatest joy. People made of shrubbery, grass, and small herbs, they are joyful people, mischeivious and joking even in the darkest of times. They always love a good game of chance, and never pass one up. They are close to the Song, and thus make excellent Sorcerors.
>+2 INT, +2 CHA, -4 STR
>Gnomes may learn seperate two sets of spells as a Sorceror, or Wizard (though as a wizard they would need to keep two spellbooks) and switch between these sets during any extended rest of 8 hours or more. These sets cannot share spells.

And thus far is everything I have written down. I'm going to stop here and see what others can add or feel is mechanically unsound. I should note that the basic races should retain their normal racial traits unless a trait is different in this setting. So different kinds of vision, preferred classes, etc, are the same.
