Might be off topic, but is it possible to paint a wooden sword to look like steel and not completely retarded?

Better off wrapping it tightly in smooth tinfoil.

Prime it good and sand it. Get rid of any porosity in the surface of the wood. Once it's good and smooth (and impermeable) spray it with metallic paint and hope for the best.

Why? Thick paints cover so much faster.

This thread is from a million years ago, and I am a necromancer, nevertheless above advice-givers are retarded.

If you sand it really well, and then prime it black, it should look pretty good. You want to prime it black so your metallic spray paint isn't super bright and fake looking. Dust it with many, many many light coats to avoid drips and streaking. You can lightly dust it with a black coat when you are done to make it nicer looking, or intermittantly lightly coat it with black as you spray it. You can acheive impressive results.
