I get some hot water running and then stop it once it’s about foot level. She gets up and turns around, and slowly dips her foot in and out.
Lana: “It’s not too cold, is it?”

Kaari: “No, the water’s warm enough, just. Still a big step.”

>Try walking through her emotions. Start by asking what she is feeling right now, even if she just gives you a stream of consciousness as an answer letting her get it out might ease some of her nerves.
Lana: “Are you okay?”

She takes a deep breath before replying,
Kaari: “I’m still scared.”

Lana: “Wanna sit back down? You can tell me what’s on your mind.”

Kaari: “I-I’m scared. The moment I get in, it feels like I could get pulled in or held under again. Just looking at the water takes be back to what happened. It’s like, it’s like I can feel him trying to push me back in.”

I'm right here for you. How about you sit down in the tub, I'll face the other way if it makes you feel more comfortable, and I'll hold your hand and pull you out if anything feels wrong. We'll take it slow, together.

I promise, you won't slip, nobody will push you, and I'll be right here. Maybe give her a little kiss on the head (then after this maybe take a bath yourself to disinfect for fleas)

That's okay. It's okay to remember. Just keep aware that you are safe, here. Every time something reminds you, let the memory pass through you until you can focus on the present again. It will get easier with time.

Tell her you'll sit on the edge of the bath and let her hold onto your hand for as long as she wants and squeeze it if she wants to. Even if it's irrational, if anything bad were to happen, you'll pull her out and make sure she's safe.

>It's okay to remember. Just keep aware that you are safe, here. Every time something reminds you, let the memory pass through you until you can focus on the present again. It will get easier with time.
Lana: “It’s okay to remember Kaari. Just stay aware, you’re safe here. I’m not going to let anything bad happen.”

She starts taking some more deep breaths, and I offer her my paw.

>I'm right here for you. How about you sit down in the tub, I'll face the other way if it makes you feel more comfortable, and I'll hold your hand and pull you out if anything feels wrong. We'll take it slow, together.
>Agreed, physical contact so no matter what her subconscious throws at her she can feel that she is safe and supported.
Lana: “I’m right here for you Kaari. You can hold my paw, and if you don’t feel safe give it a tug. I’ll pull you back to dry land.”

She tenses up for a moment, and lets out another breath.
Kaari: “Promise?”

Lana: “Of course. I’ll even face the other way. I promise not to look.”

She grabs my paw.

Kaari: “Thanks for putting up with me Lana.”

She pauses for a moment, before looking back at the tub.
Kaari: “Mind looking away for a moment while I get in?”

I nod my head and she lets go of my paw. I turn around and face the faucet, and start running some more hot water.

Soon she’s holding my paw again.
Kaari: “I can just tug on your arm and you’ll help me out?”

Lana: “I’ve got you Kaari. Just say the word or tug on my arm and I’ll keep you safe.”

I hear her get back in the tub, and I sit down on the side looking away from her.
Lana: “Feeling okay?”

Kaari: “Mmmhm.”

Lana: “Do you want me to close the shower curtain a bit for some more privacy?”

Kaari: “I-it’s fine. I trust you Lana. Can you keep talking though?”

Lana: “Sure. What do you want me to talk about?”

Kaari: ”Anything anything nice or interesting?”

Lana: “You know, I did see a trailer for a pretty interesting movie last night.”

Kaari: “Oh, what’s it about? Maybe we could go see it sometime.”

Lana: “Forgot the name of it, but it was about a firefighting deer trying to save a secretary from an office building. Probably some other stuff, but it was pretty late at night.”

>you've been collecting old stuffed animals lately. Stuff from your childhood cartoons. Something about it is both nostalgic and comfortable.
Lana: ”Hm, what else… a little silly, but I did go digging around for my old plushies. First few nights back home were a little rough. A little embarrassing, but I just needed something soft and nostalgic to help keep my mind off things at night.”

>I suggest talking to her about your feelings after everything that happened, like your anxieties.
Lana: “It’s just- I’ve…”

She looks at me with so much attention and concern. How do I even talk to her about this? Is this even the time to talk about it? I should be helping her, not venting my anxieties out. But what do I tell her? Do I just tell her I don’t want to be around others, that I’m scared of being around her and hurting her?

Kaari: “L-Lana-“

I was doing fine earlier when she got here, but now I’m back to thinking about that night! I fucked up and everyone almost got killed because of it!

I don’t even know where or how to even begin…

Let's be open about what's living in our heads. Odds are that Kaari's more focused on her own concerns than what we're dealing with, so let's be up front with the fact that we're still processing the trauma.

Follow your own advice. Take it slow, breathe easy, and just try to be honest with how you're feeling. And, honestly, just her knowing that she's not the only one affected by this, the only one having a rough time, is probably beneficial to her. A lot of trouble with trauma is feeling bad about yourself for having it. Knowing someone you care about is going through the same thing can help contextualize what you're dealing with.

Plus it might help her think less about the water if you talk about how much accidentally scratching her paw made you scared.

Kaari: “UGH! Stupid buggers!”

She almost dunks her head in the water but stops.

Kaari: ”I can’t do it. Lana, there’s got to be a better way I can do this!”

Get a cup or a small container from somewhere in there (if she's ok with you running to get it) and let her/help her use it to pour the water over her head instead. She won't have to dunk her head that way, but she can still get clean.

Alternatively, turn on the shower and let it wash over her head.

No combs, my fur is way too thick for them. I’ve got brushes to spare though. I fill up the cup and squeeze the flea shampoo in it.

Lana: “Alright Kaari, I’m going to pour this on you nice and slowly. Do you want me to count down from three?”
Kaari: ”Yeah…”[/smalll]

Lana: “Alright. Three…two…one…”

She tenses up and starts breathing heavily, but not much fussing about.

Lana: “That’s it for the first cup. You doing alright?”

Kaari: [small]”Yeah…”

Lana: “Alright, I’ll try not to get shampoo in your eyes, but try to squint or close them just in case.”
Next up I get to lathering her head and face with shampoo…

Finally after a very thorough rinse and lather session, I think she’s as clean she’s gonna be for now.

I excuse myself for a moment, and take the towel out of the dryer for her.

Kaari: “Thanks again for help Lana. I feel a little a bit better after all of that.”

Lana: “Anything to help out, Kaari.”

Kaari: “Mind giving me a moment to dry off and get dressed?”

Lana: “I think you might wanna borrow some clothes instead. There might be fleas laying around-“

Kaari: “Augh gross! Why’d you have to say that. Good thinking though.”

So…laundry’s up on the chore list. I’ll have to find some clean clothes she can borrow as well.

Shit, what am I going to do? She’s like, three sizes smaller than I am.

Sister, nothing is cuter and better for bonding than your girlfriend wearing your way too big baggy clothes.

Step 2)CUDDLE

Step 3)THAT

Step 4)BUNNY!

>>

If your clothes are way too big even for being baggy you can take one side and tie it into a knot closer to her size. Pj pants with drawstrings should be fine too.
You should get a bag to put her old clothes in so any fleas on them don't get out more than they already have. Maybe even soak them in some of the flea shampoo for a bit first just to start killing off whatever is left.

I go over and start filling up the tub again.

Kaari: “Oh, taking a bath too?”

Lana: “No, though I probably should sooner than later. I’m gonna dip your clothes in some flea shampoo as well if that’s okay?”

Kaari: “Oh, good thinking! By the way, do you have a dryer gun I can use?”

Lana: “Top cabinet, right side. Let me know if you can’t reach it.”

I get back to soaking the clothes, and I can hear Kaari's found the dryer.
