Psychic powers are more believable than something ignoring the square cube law.

I love the beat'em up genre, and I assume most of you do to. So lets talk a bit about them, why we love them, which ones we still play from time to time.

The Dungeon and Dragons arcade games are an obvious high point. The magic and item use system actually is one I haven't seen used often (actually, I can't think of a similar system in a beat'em up right now), combat was solid and classic Capcom character designs and animation. One of the last greats of the arcade era, and sadly only made available on the Japanese Sega Saturn, I pretty much use a modded original xbox just so I can play it anytime I want.

Castle Crashers is a damn good time with friends. Used a leveling system and a simple magic system (basically a special move with it's own gauge instead of draining your life) it was (as far as I recall) the first big beat'em up of this generation, with online play and the ability coax your fallen comrades back up if you find an opening in the fight and want to slam on the button for (your comrade's) dear life. Tons of character, some with really interesting magic attacks (though the ninja really disappointed me).

Scott Pilgrim... the only things it needs is online play a patch so it won't crash all the damn time. Leveling system for moves, river city ransom stat building, and a great artstyle and quirky sense of crazy. Besides it and Castle Crashers there aren't really any big names in the genre this gen, but these are great modern representations of why we still play these. With sprites by Paul Robertson, it didn't even have to be as good as it is.

Maybe later I'll go into Streets of Rage 2 or Capcom's Alien vs. Predator, but til then, what beat'em ups do you love, and why?

You covered the big ones. Only one I think bears mention in 2d is Cadillacs 'n Dinosaurs (Capcom also). Plenty of crappy 3d but Otogi 2 (XBOX) was big dumb fun. One of these days I'll play Metal Wolf Chaos, same company. SO AMERICAN.

Metal Wolf Chaos is potentially more American than anything that has, or ever will exist, which is odd. It's also damn fun.

What was Cadillacs 'n Dinosaurs like, I never got to play it. Did it have any odd systems or between round minigames?

Cadillacs and dinosaurs didn't have any weird or special gameplay, neither had minigames or anything out of the ordinary for a 2.5D beat'em up, except for a driving stage where you all had to do is ram your car into every enemy in the screen.

But it was a damn good game. Good graphics, perfect controls and gameplay, simplistic but effective. Variety of enemies and levels, cool music, and the difficulty wasn't TOO bullshit (the last levels are crazy hard, but I've seen people finishing the game in an Arcade saloon). The regular machine had only 2 players, but I think there were some that allowed 3. I'm not sure, though.

So yeah, check it out. It's an example of a game that without being exceptional, it's just good fun.

Pretty much that, yeah. 3P co-op, lots of entertaining weapons, and a good number of easy-to-kill mooks to kill with said weapons. Plus, you could beat the hell out of dinosaurs with bazookas and bare fists. Overall not very different from AvP which you already mentioned.

Otogi 2 really is my favorite after D&D: Tower of Doom and... is that Shadow over Mystara there? The sequel was the better or the two, certainly, but lacks much of the nostalgia value for me. Damn swamp dragon and your cheap kills.

I'm still annoyed none of From Software's games seem to be on the 360 backward compatibility list, and still amused that they created both the most retardedly AMERICAN and most Japanese 3d beat'em-ups ever made.

Dat fucking Centaur! And she could change to normal legs too, so I wouldn't need a step stool... it's also a game I have on that modded xbox, though it has some graphical glitches. I honestly never liked Golden Axe as much as some others in the genre, but Revenge of Death Adder was the series best, and it was simply beautiful. I don't think it ever got a home console version, so thank goodness for emulation. Like most of the games mentioned, I really wish it would see a xbla and psn release.

This image I found... makes me rather happy.

Golden Axe was average at best.

Revenge had it though with branching paths, pretty graphics, some of the segments...

Only GA III came closest to that.

It's certainly one of those things that makes me wonder how it lasted long enough to become awesome. Streets of Rage, for example, isn't all that amazing... at all. But Streets of Rage 2 is a gift from God.

Wonder what would have happened if Alien Storm had gotten a badass sequel. THAT'S NO MAILBOX!!!
