Let's talk about really good rpg maker general indie games

lets start with OFF, of course.
OFF is an excellently surreal rpg by some dude called Mortis Ghost.

In it, you guide the batter, who is on a mission to purify the world.

It has some really great characters, the world is really interesting, and yes you should give it a try.
The music is pretty dope as well.

Next up on the list is the ever-more-famous Yume Nikki.
Yume Nikki is a bit different from most games in that there is a kind of distinct lack of actual gameplay. The majority of the time is spent wandering around inside your dreams, finding effects that allow you to do various things.
It is kind of a massive bitch to get working on some versions of windows seven, but as bad as I am making it sound it quite honestly is a really interesting game, and despite the lack of an apparent story there are very subtle hints as to what is going on in madotsuki's head littered throughout the dream worlds.
It's one of those "talk about it on forums" kind of games, where so much is left open to interpretation that it might as well just be a half-finished mad-libs.

You can find more info out about it here, and to those of you using windows seven, good luck figuring shit out.

While we are on the subject of rpg maker games, I should mention a few others here that are really good despite them being made in other engines.
For example, Charles Barkley: shut up and jam GAIDEN.

This game is NUTS.
It is touted as an official sequel to space jam, and follows the exploits of Charles Barkley as he copes with the post-apocalyptic ruins of the planet after he pretty much fucked over everything by performing a chaos dunk.

This game only gets weirder from there, with basketball-skinned cyberdwarfs, nuclear basketball matches, and generally just a whole lot of insane weirdness.

The game was made by cboyardee, who is also producing a sequel following the adventures of barkley's son, hoops barkley.
You can find the game in all its psychotic glory here:

Next up is a series of games by well-known game critic Arthur "Yahtzee" croshaw, the guy behind the Zero Punctuation series over on the escapist.
He is REALLY GOOD at games, as it turns out, and this shines out particularly well in the Chzo Mythos game series.

The games chronicle a series of connected events centering around a well-known thief by the name of Trilby. They are mostly point and click adventure stories, with one minor exception I believe. The gameplay is very solid however, and thankfully there is no monkey island shit going on with the puzzles.

The games were released a bit odd, so for reference you'll be wanting to start with Five Days a Stranger, in which trilby infiltrates a mansion and soon finds himself trapped there along with several other people.

From there you'll want to move on to Trilby's notes, (which is by far the best in the series), then 7 days a skeptic, and finally 6 days a sacrifice.

You can find all of them here, along with the excellent stealth-platformer Art of Theft set prior to the games events which is otherwise unconnected to the main story.

http://www.fullyramblomatic.com/games.htm

you should also check out Poacher, which is his most recent game and an experiment in the metroidvania style of gameplay.

That's about all I got for now, but I'll add to this post whatever else I find that's decent and type up descriptions for them. All of these are free and of moderate length, and yume nikki in particular is fucking MASSIVE, so there shouldn't be much of an issue there.
Feel free to add any of your own games to this, this is meant to be a collection thread I guess and I always love finding new games.

Oh, also, regarding shut up and jam gaiden:
This is a picture of what the sequel looks like, and pretty much accurately describes the tone of the whole damn series.
>>

oh wait, ACTUALLY!
I did remember one more:
Cave Story.
Cave story is a VERY successful indy game about a robot who wakes up in a cave with no memories and soon finds out a mad scientist is ruining everything.
Simple plot, great gameplay, lots of secrets and shit, and a metric TON of console versions out there if you feel like pouring in money.
You can get it for free here though, in all it's 8-bit lookin' glory:
http://www.cavestory.org/
(It's also got a more polished version on steam right now that comes with the best ending, which is actually absent in the free version.)

Trilby's Notes comes after 7 Days, in the series, not before. They're not meant to be played completely chronologically.
>>
No. 24398 ID: 57a559

Yes, I do believe there are references to 7 days in Trilby's notes. Very small references, but still there nonetheless. For six days though it's absolutely necessary to play the entire series before you fire it up.

I mean, really, if your going to play it in chronological order, the third entry (6 days) wraps the entire series up using every bit of information from every game! That means you play 7 days last, and that's the weakest link! Build it all up! Six is the best one, well, it's at least really close to Trilby's notes in quality.
>>
No. 24399 ID: d6ef5d

Pff. We know what cave story is.
http://tgchan.org/wiki/Cave_Story

...and what's this downloading cavestory from a mirror instead of grabbing the original from studio pixel? You too good to navigate through moon runes, son? >:V

And that's mildly annoying if they added some new ending to the steam version.
>>
No. 24400 ID: b53faa

The new ending just includes a fight with the evil wizard-frog that has claim over the island and causes all the trouble in the first place. It also makes it so that the mimigas that are fought against dont die.

It was added as a mod to the game later on, and can probably be found floating about somewhere.

As for trilby's notes, that one actually does have a LOT to do with the Chzo mythos, as it explains a lot of the backstory behind the idol as well as the Tall Man.
>>
No. 24401 ID: 57a559

>>24400
That was in the original free Cave Story too, the hard ending. You save the girl, get the best booster by ignoring some other guy that would probably die without your help, go left when it makes sense to hightail it.

Balros is the frog guy right? Totally in the free version, not even a mod. No idea about the mimigas because fuck hell. I'm not going in there.
>>

huh, didnt know that.

Also, there is one particular rpg I am thinking of posting here, which is A: massive, and B: surprisingly well done.
The issue is, it is uh
REALLY nsfw
as in there actually has to be a toggle on it for a sfw mode
you will literally be exploring a dungeon and find a massive painting of one of the characters getting it in the butt from a horse
Should I post it?

No. 24418 ID: b53faa

Yeah alright then
This folks, is the legend of queen opala. Set in a standard-ish fantasy world, this game has more than a few different aspects that make it unigue, such as a dating-sim type thing and a robust fighting system.
You can get a lot out of this game, and the game itself is actually REALLY FUCKING HUGE

The story is centered around your player and queen opala, who breached a hole in reality or some shit and is now being pursued by eeeeeeviiiiilll!!!
It's a lot better than I made it seem, honestly, and there is a sequel currently being made that is already a few episodes in.
You can find all the info you'll be needing right here, yo:
http://loqo.wikispaces.com/

As I warned you, if you dont go with the sfw version ofthis, there is going to be a metric TON of REALLY GRAPHIC PORNOGRAPHY
just warning yall ahead of time.
Also, there are morality choices that arent invariably split straight up between "Punching babies" and "donating my porsche to charity" and I love that about it.

Have any of you guys ever played Hanako Games' games? They're crazy! Like, crazy awesome.

Magical Diary is an awesome, complicated dating sim/Harry Potter parody/weird puzzle game. Long Live the Queen (starring the adorable Princess Elodie from this picture) is a crazy, addictive, and challenging life sim chock full o' dumb ways to die. Then there's Date Warp, which is a visual novel that blew my mind in so many ways, but I can't talk about it without spoiling them.

Do yourself a favor and check out this awesome indie developer if you haven't already. At the very least, the three games I mentioned are worth a try.

(But if you don't play through Date Warp all 11 times to get all the endings... then you don't really know Date Warp. That's one that's easy to give up on... but don't!)

Going back to this, I finally got around to playing it. It is failry interesting, though kinda simple. The goal is to reach the core of an asteroid, then using all the energy you collected to blow the fucker up.
The tricky bit is, you have to gently graze the walls to gain energy, and the interior of the asteroid has a bunch of foes inside that you have to dodge and lazer.
And both shields and lazers take energy to use, meaning that you often have to risk crashing your craft in order to make it to the end with enough energy to blast the space rock.
It's not the most complex game I've played, but it is good enough I am gonna give it a reccomendation.
Just a warning, though: it controls somewhat like moonlander, so you have to tap the up key a LOT.

Just a little warning: there's a certain dungeon in the first third of the game where you'll find a cat in a room. If you enter the room when the cat is near the door, it may glitch through you and come between you and the door. It will be unable to move, and will spam you with 'pets plz', after several of which it normally moves away, but now you're stuck. There are no save points before this in the dungeon.

Needless to say, I was not a happy paladin.

I encountered that too, found a (sort of) way around it, just keep pressing up & spacebar, eventually you'll get away & go back out the "room" & away from that blasted cat, the worst part tho is the cat will follow you so to get past it you'll have to wait until it moves away from the door, run & generally hope

I managed to enter and exit the floor enough times it got lost in the guard's break room. And the glitch I encountered actually had it behind me next to the door, meaning it couldn't move away and I couldn't do anything cause it kept moving into me and doing its text box.

dunno then, usually the best thing to do I found was hold a direction whilst spamming the spacebar & with luck eventually you'll get to move even tho it will follow you, it's a pain & time consuming but EVENTUALLY you'll be able to escape(?)
if not.... refer to the FFFFFFFFFFFF.jpg above

I'm past the cat now, in the China arc. It just put me off the game for a few days when I had to restart the tower, and thought I'd warn everyone about the cat.

I actually made an account on the official forums JUST TO REPORT THAT
Thankfully, I played enough classic metal gear to be able to avoid it, usually.

YO GUYS WE GOT A NEW GAME TO FAWN OVER HERE
Mates, let me introduce you to Undertale. Undertale is a FANTASTIC game, complete with spectacular aesthetics, an incredible cast (read: goatmom), and an outstanding soundtrack composed by the rather notious Toby "radiation" fox, of homestuck fame.
I highly suggest trying the demo out, and if you have a mac they are in fact working on a release for that system soon!
find more info here: http://indiegames.com/2013/05/rpg_undertale_shows_no_mercy_i.html
and download it right here yo!

It's under development, I think. The demo is literally all that has been made.

PLAY IT ANYWAY. PLAY IT.

Hey guys, time for the next indie game for y'all! This one is called "I'm Scared of Girls."
In ISoG, you play as a deceased young crossdresser who is going through his life and memories cutting ties to his old life so he can be reborn.
The art style is VERY reminiscent of cave story, and I am having a surprisingly good time just seeing where its going!
Find this thing here, yo: http://rpgmaker.net/games/3427/

Yo, I have actually been thinkin':
what if we got together and actually did a giant collab thing? Lord knows we got enough fantastic artsits and writers here to make something worthwhile, and it might be a fun diversion to have some giant collaborative game project going on here at some point.
I am thinking either some giant crossover thing or an entirely new and original thing,d anybody on board for that?

i'm sure people would be, but based on our track record of similar projects it'll most likely fall through

unless you are devoted enough to try to make it on your own.

I lack artistic and programming skill, sadly. My ability to contribute would be limited, depending on what we're doing.

If it helps, I can do some decent enough machinery and such. I am also good at cityscapes and the like
Honestly with the wide variety of fantastic artists on here, we should at LEAST have a handle on the art assets. Writers and people who can do music howerver might be a challenge...
And we will def need a leader, and I am telling you right now I can NOT do that shit. It does not work ever.
>>
No. 24745 ID: 2baea8

>>24744
Well, we'd probably need:
-Project Leader who can keep everyone together, and at least keep the artists on track long enough to get the basic things we need (character portraits, sprites, cityscapes, backgrounds, etc.).
-Someone familiar with scripts and computer science, in case we need to rig something up that whatever engine we're using can't do already. This role becomes more invaluable if we are not using an engine, and making this from scratch. (I would not advise the latter option, since it increases risk of discouragement or loss of interest)
-Artists. This is tgchan, and this department should not be a problem. As mentioned above, one artist should do a section on their own, otherwise clashing art styles might throw people off. If one character is in Lagotrope's cartoon-y style, and the other has a portrait from Pixel Adventures, the clash might be disrupting to immersion. On the other hand, the asset or disadvantage of this effect would depend on game genre and plot elements.
-Writers to design the plots and characters. Since they'll need to collaborate on a lot of things, these should be people who work well together.
-If we want to be original, we can have some people make an original soundtrack. Otherwise we can probably just use already existing songs, like Barkley and Drunken Paladin tend to do. Not a necessary role, but could add that 'home-made' feel, like fresh baking.
-Collaborator, for lack of a better term. The person who takes what everybody made and puts together the first/final drafts. It's easier with one person, because with more than one they'd have to constantly send stuff back and forth to keep their work compatible.
-A polisher or two to look through, play test, and generally help correct any mistakes between the first version and the final game. Might be the same person as the collaborator, or everyone in general, but more eyes work better for combing out errors.

I lack the skills to fulfill roles aside maybe a polisher.

>>24745
Points I neglected to mention:
-Game balance would go from the writers noting difficulty, character skills and abilities, etc. -> to the collaborator implementing it -> to the polishing team finding any mistakes.
-While having one active collaborator would work best, they should regularly be sending their progress to the leader and polishers. That way mistakes can be found, and if the collaborator ever mysteriously vanished, we don't lose all the work so far.

Actually, I might be able to do a bit of work with that art thing. The way I am thinking this would be best would be to make a whole bunch of moderately self-contained "Chapters" following the exploits of one or two differnt characters at a time, with small elements eventually leading up to the grand finale, or perhaps just as a "tales of this strange world internet goons came up with"
I think rpg maker would be a good go-to for a start on the engine however, as it has a lot of decent tools to make it flow easy.

Back to my first idea however, say we wrapped up the first character's arc with him having been an adventurer sporting an rpg and exploration style gameplay system.
Then when his is done, we move on to the next chunk, which could be from, say, the POV of a Stripper trying to seduce her way into high society. For her we would make creative use of flags or something to make a sort of dating sim thing, and then once THAT is done, who knows where we would go?

And to make it a bit more lenient on everyone, I was thinking of adding new stories in as patches after the first one is done, allowing for wonderfullly varied experiences to be done on our own time.

Thoughts?

this is what i think, just make a simple rpg to start off with. doesn't have to have a story at all, rumble bumble bimbleton needs to go on a decent short journey to the store to pick up a faucet replacement. But along the way are mildly annoying monsters that he has to battle through to get there.

You don't want to be overly complex with your first project, it's good to have ambition but using your masterpiece on a test will make it seem off in a way.

>rumble bumble bimbleton needs to go on a decent short journey to the store to pick up a faucet replacement
We could start with this, it's nice and simple. Add in some problems along the way, and it'd be a good first 'Chapter' (like archivemod's idea). Then gradually, bigger things could be done, once the project gets a flow going.

We should probably make a new thread for this, clogging up the showcase thread might be a bad idea.
Still, I can doodle up some quick shit for the MC later today after I finish cleaning, to help visualize things.

I guess if we're hopping on the self-promotion wagon here, hello, I am make games sometimes.

They're all pretty much terrible prototypes BUT THAT WON'T STOP ME DUMPING THEM TO THE INTERNET

tear into them and me at your whim

Throwbots { http://cirri.al/ld20/LD20b.swf } was made for my first Ludum Dare entry, the 20th Ludum Dare contest, on the theme of "It's dangerous to go alone, take this!" (it was a terrible theme) Ludum Dare is a 48 hour game development competition that happens three times a year, and if memory serves I made this in April 2011.

Aphelion Incident { http://cirri.al/ld21/Aphelion_Incident.swf } was made for LD21 for the theme of "Escape" and was slightly better than Throwbots possibly maybe.

Blue Moon { http://cirri.al/ld22/bluemoon.swf } was made for LD22, theme being "Alone", and is probably my best ludums dared game ever ever.

Red Swarm { http://cirri.al/ld26/ } is my latest game for Ludum Dare after an entire year of false starts, lack of inspiration and lack of time! Made for LD26, it was made for (and failed utterly) the theme of "Minimialism", a theme I strongly object to the existence of given that any game made in 48 hours is going to be pretty goddamn minimalist. That aside, I reached too far with the limited time I had and made something severely subpar to my original idea. Blue Moon is probably better.

As far as my not-Ludum-Dare and technically-finished-but-not-great other games go, there's Dig Shark { http://cirri.al/digshark/Dig_Shark.swf }, made for last year's Sea Wizards Shark Savers stream live over three days! I'll be trying to outdo myself in that regard for the upcoming Seamergency stream, where I will have most of four days to work, and complete terror and apprehension to fight.

also back in 2008 i made a dumb grow clone called The Desert Obelisk it's really bad don't play it { http://www.kongregate.com/games/cirrial/the-desert-obelisk }
