Psychic powers are more believable than something ignoring the square cube law.

I got this crazy idea that i wanted to make a Kingdom of Loathing clone. This thread will be detailing my project and the progress i make on it. I will be accepting criticism along the path and I would gladly take some help if you are willing to offer it. Right now i have alot of ideas written in my little notebook, but I will start with working on the beginner area which will be the testing part. I would like to mention that I don't have any programming experience so i'll be doing this in baby steps. Maybe even slower.

so far the attributes i have at the moment is Brawn, Brain, and (b)Bility.

Brawn- has physical damage, defense and Health Points as substats.

Brain- has Magic Points and Spell Damage as substats

(a)Bility- has Initiative, Dodge, and Ranged Damage as substats

I'm honestly not sure what the general equation for rpgs are for how to calculate this and pit it against enemy stats so i might need some math nerd to help me out.

also the adventure limit, I'm not gonna do the KoL version that limits the amount of adventures per day... I was thinking of having a mechanic where you eat 3 times a day and sleep to re-earn adventures. I also want to have a separate Resting mechanic to help regain HP and MP.

And that is the play portion of the number crunching.

I also have three classes starting out. Melee, Magic and Ranged.
For the melee, I'm going to call it bear-poker, his main stat will be brawn. Leveling will be based on that stat and how high it is.
For the mage class, calling it Snorelock, he'll be focusing on brain stat.
And the Ranged class, who is being called The Shootist, will be focusing on (a)bility.

I will be listing their skills as seperate posts on this thread- but that's after i come up with what they can do asside from the obvius.
My next post though will be the testing area and the key points that make it up (as soon as i finish drawing it)

this is the first area that the players are going to be introduced into. The selectable areas here are the cutebold44 stand, the Butterflinger's Bargains, Muddy Pond and Your Shack.

I'm probably going to do that linking a specific part of the image to an event programming thing... i'm not sure what it's called. If that doesn't work i'll split the pic into picture links in a 3x3 invisible table. So the quick rundown is that this:
Cutebold44 is the story giving character, starts off with a tutorial about how the HUD works and shows you the misc. things you need to know along with assigning you the early quests and so on. For the test run it'll just be him doing the tutorial and assigning quests.
Butterflingers Bargains is going to be the generic store in the beginning having things such as weapons, armor, food stuff, etc.
Your shack will be your own little area to rest, eat and customize. More detail about what I want to do with this in a later post.
And the Muddy Pond is going to be the first random encounter zone where you fight fish and preform non combat encounters. More details about that in a later post aswell.

If I can get an inevitable test running and it goes smoothly i will populate this map with more things such as a sorta guild area, another random encounter area, and maybe a special event area. But this is just going to be what there is for the start.

If anyone has any cool ideas for random encounters or items to earn or buy it'd help me out pretty cool like.

What sort of item? Is there any theme or flavor they should have?

Oh, and what's the balance? How high should stats be and what's the maximum level you should get from this zone?

I have one idea for an item:
>>23009
chirps' khaki miniskirt:
+3 bility
+10% initiative

It looks like, well, a khaki miniskirt.

Description: A replica of the minskirt of <insert self-...insert here, possibly "the famed adventurer chirps">, it makes you feel nearly sas pretty as he is.

Or something.

i figured out how to do a sort of adventure system that i like more then the KoL one. It's based on Energy Points from the meals you eat in a meal count. It'll work like this, there will be Food and Drink item categories. These food and drinks will each have quality types. The food count will be as follows, you will be able to have 3 meals before you Sleep. 1 meal comprises of 1 food and 1 drink. Each food and drink will have a quality rating: Terrible, Bad, Not Bad, Fair, Good, Great, and Fantastic. Each quality will represent an amount of energy you will receive after you sleep. A player will start off with being able to eat 3 meals any time before sleeping and get energy to go out to adventure some more. There will be items which will give tempory buffs to the amount of energy you recieve from foods, and there will be skills and such to increase the number of meals at a time. I'm thinking the meal cap will be 7.

Now the energy will be what you use to adventure and stuff, like places will require certain amount of energy to have encounters.

I think it's a good system- gives the players the chance to continually play the game as long as you can keep farming food items.

Frank's pompadour? -Initiative because they see can see it from halfway across the map. Gloves of god strength? Cuddle bee honey? Gin and hair tonic? Krobin Headleaf Tea?

Good luck on the comp thing; I hope you'll be back soon.
