Well, it's been a week since the premiere, so it's safe to say we're officially in Season 3. How's everyone liking it so far?

And thus, the first year of Season 3 comes to a close. Nine episodes have come and gone. Only four remain.

I think this was a pretty good season so far. I liked the characters' portrayal; there seems to be more focus on their good qualities, which is nice, since they can get neglected or overshadowed at times.

I also like how they've been treating fan favorites that they've brought back. Luna's finally growing into her Princess of the Night role, and they handled Trixie very well.

Now, one trend I noticed is that there were a lot of references to Twilight's studies, with her learning more magic at the behest of the Princess. Probably foreshadowing. Hopefully to something quite impressive. Looking forward to it.

I wish they were allowed to maintain at least a vague chronology. It would be hilarious to have Spike go "A balloon ride!" only to find it still torn to shreds by Lighting Dust's tornado. Or at least heavily patched up.

Star Swirl the Bearded = Discord

Whenever Discord hypnotized one of the mane 6, stars appeared in the background.

When Discord hypnotized Rainbow Dash, silhouette of the maze was shown with its center being a swirl.

Both Discord and Star Swirl have a white beard.

Discord is able to time travel, and time travel spells are kept in wing named after Star Swirl.

Amniomorphic spell may actually be Omniomorphic, which supposedly would transform things. Star Swirl is its inventor, and Discord looks like a product of multiple unsuccessful transformations.

Star Swirl lived at the same period as Clover the Clever (he was mentioned in Hearth's Warming Eve), and both Discord and regal sisters seem to appear shortly after Equestria's founding. Discord clearly remembers Celestia, and even seems to know her personality ("I forgot how boring you can be, Celestia"), which implies he had spent quite a bit of time with her in the past.

If Starswirl is actually Discord, he probably messed with extremely powerful and dangerous spells, such as time travel and Omniomorphic. The Starswirl section is the most guarded because it contains all of the most dangerous spells, all designed by Starswirl (Discord)

I have not been keeping up for a while but that post right there got me all curious and shit.
If that does happen to be true, that means you have one dedicated as hell lore writer on a team for My Little Pony, along with a consistency checker, and writing team must be really persistent to leave all these really tiny foreshadowing details in the animation for a children's show.

I mean, hell, it was crazy when Gravity Falls was doing it. But now MLP is getting in on the conspiracy action in a show generally marketed for children.
This is, of course, ignoring the existence adult market that might pay attention (and they have!) to these details, but I'm not sure if anyone in the MLP staff is writing for them at all even if they know there's a sizable market in it.

Is it weird to analyze how the writers are considering their markets for these shows?

Added to that: Discord tells Celestia he doesn't "turn ponies into stone", implying that he thinks of himself as a pony. Which would make sense if Discord was once a pony.

This is just wild speculation, but I strongly suspect they were originally going to make it a series (that's what all the early press releases and articles outright stated) and then after either the massively negative fan reaction, or just deciding it didn't really have a whole lot more to it than the one story, took what they had and made it into a single movie.

It will be whatever it is. It will probably be mediocre kiddie fare and not aggressively offensively bad.

There's no reason to think that it'll be significantly worse than the main series. I mean, there were those character designs, but the ones in the preview actually look good.

She is going there specifically to receive some sort of macguffin and get back out. She does have a mission, her friends do know she is there, and there is a specific reason for them to try to get her back when she is inevitably delayed.

It's dumb, but it's no dumber than the plots of most of the episodes.

I saw a camrip of Equestria Girls. It wasn't bad actually. Not any worse than the wedding episode! Most of the humor was in sight gags, which are awesome.

Other than a vague hope that this is the last season, not really.

That we at least go up to Season 10.

Oh man, 10 seasons of ponies. I might not even watch it but the butthurt would be delicious.

Especially since by that time it would have turned into a over-commercialized, Flanderized mess of a merch-whore. Half the butthurt would be from the bronies themselves.

You know what? I changed my mind, let's hope Hasbro is never merciful enough to let MLP: FIM die.

I'll just stick to my g1 ponies TYVM.

Back on the subject of ponies, some last-minute musings:

My thoughts on Princess Twilight are that Twilight Sparkle becoming an alicorn princess is a good idea. It's a fitting development of her personal story arc as Celestia's apprentice, and there's a lot of potential for interesting new stories.

I also like the explanation they had for it. The Elements of Harmony are mysterious and powerful magical items, so it makes sense that they could achieve feats of magic previously unheard of. And since they represent the bonds between different ponies, it's fitting that they could be used to become an alicorn, which symbolizes harmony between the three pony races.

The only problem was the execution. Having Twilight solve a vaguely related crisis (which she caused) and then achieve god tier by accident isn't the most climactic way to set up an event like this. It feels very sudden. Even so, I still have great hopes for the future of the storyline.
