Last day of Autumn sale.
Divinity II: The Dragon Knight Saga - A pretty good RPG with fantastic writing. Comes with the expansion and fixes all the issues that Divinity II had at launch. About 60 hours long. $9.99 (75% off)

Bastion - Action game with very responsive control and fast-paced gameplay. Sound is where Bastion especially shines, with an outstanding soundtrack and a constant dynamic narrator that tells Bastion's interesting story in an unobtrusive way. Something around 8 hours for a single playthrough, but New Game+, Idols, and just starting over have gotten this to 41 hours for me. $10.04 (33% off)

STALKER series - Shadow of Chernobyl and Call of Pripyat are both great FPS games in an interesting setting, but Clear Sky has poor design decisions that ruin the experience. Each game is about 20-30 hours long depending on how many sidequests you do. $17.49 for a bundle of the two good games (50% off)

Torchlight - Pretty good action RPG made by the creators of Diablo and Diablo II. Extremely variable playtime, you can blow through it pretty quickly if you want to. Most people find "Normal" to be too easy. $7.49 (50% off)

Defense Grid: The Awakening - Very polished Tower Defense game, with varying levels of mazing depending on the level. The playtime you'll get out of this depends on whether you enjoy replaying levels with increased difficulty and restrictions or not. Just playing through the game is somewhere around 10 hours. $4.99 (50% off)

King's Bounty series - Based on the old King's Bounty game, these are massive strategy games with character progression and a good deal of customization. The game is pretty solidly balanced, and many different strategies will work. Unless you're not playing on the Impossible difficulty, in which case no strategy will work and you will just curl up to your frogwife and cry. I got 85 hours out of King's Bounty: The Legend just going through the game once, and I have 93 hours in Armored Princess/Crossworlds. An important thing to note is that the Crossworlds expansion has an updated version of the Armored Princess campaign, so unless you want to play it twice you should probably do the Crossworlds version of it. $17.49 (50% off) is the bundle price for both games and the expansion to the second, and I think both games are worth playing.

So I've been waiting to grab Europa Universalis III at a price this low for a while now and decided, what the hell- I'll play the demo before buying it.

Immediately on launch, it crashes tellimng me that I don't have the 128MB of video memory I need to run it. The fact of the matter is that I have 2215MB of video memory, so I'm guessing my system is too new? Or perhaps this is only a problem in the demo and won't be a problem if I actually buy it. Or that could be wishful thinking. I'm at a loss, here.

Aaaaaand the Achron demo immediately crashes to desktop as well. Fuckin Steam sales... making me miss out on all the PRICES and VALUES.

>I have 2215MB of video memory
...

It worries me that graphics cards have got so penis extension-ariffic that you might actually be right.

SiN is stupidly uber-cheap, BTW, and although it's a single episode failed experiment that presumably has no ending (not played it yet), it includes the original game, which from its demo was pretty much late '90s shooter hooray, just unfortunate enough to get eclipsed by Half-Life and mostly forgotten.

Also Painkiller is cheap for yet more old-fashioned shootan, and Cargo: The Quest for Gravity if you like very strange games where you run around kicking fat dwarf versions of Richard O'Brian and bodging together infeasible vehicles. Oh, and EDGE, which is a rather charming little port from a mobile phone apparently but it doesn't show if you liked 16-bit-era isometric nagivational puzzlers like Marble Madness (but slightly less infuriating to control).
>>
No. 19092 ID: 61113b

Okay, my mistake. I was reading the graphics memory. Yeah, I knew that didn't sound right. Actual video memory is 512MB. Point is, I'm able to play your latest blockbuster PC hit du jour at a decent framerate and yet EUIII can't seem to recognize that I have the resources to run it, leaving me unable to reap the benefits of the sale.

Not quite as good as Age of Empires, but gratis DRM-free copy is worth adding to your accounts.

Also SMAC is on sale for three of your American "bucks". Because you didn't want to work on updates/fanart/whatever anyway. (As is basically all of their everything. Listing all the games that are good an on sale there would end up longer than a Golem Quest suggestion.)

What I said about King's Bounty in the earlier post stands, but it is 75% off today instead of the 50% from the last sale. Fantastic and massive strategy game that's a spiritual sequel to the original King's Bounty game.
Only play on Hard if you are prepared for an actual challenge, because King's Bounty does not fuck around. The Warrior class seems a little less viable on Hard than the others, but I still beat the game on Hard with a Warrior. You are likely to be required to change up your strategy at least partially depending on what resources you have at hand, so don't expect to one-trick-pony your way through.
Impossible will constantly kick you in the dick and you will not get anywhere without being a Mage that takes advantage of everything. You are going to be short on money and troops and constantly changing up your strategy just to barely survive. I ended up getting to only level 9 on Impossible on the second game's expansion before I took a break and never came back.

I've played about an hour of it, haven't had much time for games - but it's fun! The physics seem very slightly wonky, but not in a way that'll mess you up in puzzles. Oh, and your crazy uncle-with-a-radio playing the part of GLaDOS?

In fact, the physics IS wonky in a way that can fuck you up, at least if your computer is struggling to keep up with the calculations like mine has been. Some randomness sneaks in to the object physics, and there are at least a few places where you need objects you have no control over to behave in a predictable way. I am looking at YOU, stack of safes dispenser that just spills them all over the floor.

The only bit of physics wonk I noticed was that when I found a way to jump onto the giant rotating display in the main 'hub' room, it doesn't carry you with it - if you stand still, it will rotate out from under you and make you fall.

I bought Creeper World 3 when it first came out. Loved the previous two Creeper World games. They all run well under WINE.

Steam refuses to offer any game to me that doesn't have an explicit Linux release, so I end up bypassing Steam half the time to buy games from the original authors. Not sure if that's better or worse.
