From what I could tell:
Brick wall|concrete|plaster(flaking)|paint
Brick wall|concrete|plaster(flaking)|paper|paint
Brick wall|concrete|paint
Depending on which part of the wall you looked at.
There was some mould under the plaster too.

Probably the best option, which also goes for two of the other walls of the room (a redundant chimney, and a window that ends about half a meter under the height of the countertop, with the counter butted and glued to the window). Such is the case with houses built a century and a half ago and 'renovated' multiple times by window-licking morons.
But being On the Cheap, the solution was instead CHIP AWAY WITH A SCRAPER LIKE THE FIST OF THE NORTHSTAR, some fresh plaster, lining paper, a good coat of paint and copious quantities of whiskey to forget about what lurks behind the rest of the wall.
