Emma stopped scavenging and listened for a moment.
“…I hear… Hooves?”
Her father’s face grew pale. “Get down! Get down!” He hissed, hiding behind a shop counter. She did as she was instructed. The trot of a horse grew closer, bringing with it the buzzing of a hundred flies. Cloven hooves clacked onto the cracked and broken linoleum tile. The creature scented the air, long ears flicking back and forth. The ink that poured down from its clouded eyes dripped down to the floor. A long tail ending in a tuft of dirty, matted hair. Its mane writhed with maggots, and a long, seemingly overgrown horn protruded from the center of its skull, closely followed by other smaller outcroppings. Its teeth were still covered in viscera, unfortunately old and dried on. The teeth themselves were long and jagged, almost as if they had grown out and broken at many different angles. A horrid stench surrounded it, akin to rotten meat and festering feces. It surveyed the abandoned convenience store, and after what seemed like an eternity of waiting, left. Emma opened her mouth to speak, but her father put a finger to his lips. They waited for thirty minutes. Finally, Blake lowered his hand.
“What was that?” Emma demanded, seeking a name for the thing that will haunt her nightmares for weeks to come.
“Looks like your wish came true, if only this world weren’t so screwed up, you might have enjoyed your first unicorn sighting.”
Emma felt sick to her stomach. “Ugh. Please tell me kaiju aren’t real…”
