You reach out to speak or cry out or scream, but you are stunned. In fact, you are shaken, unnerved, rattled, terrified -- too many thoughts.
The sound of the orb no longer interrupts your thoughts and the full gamut of thought and emotion you willingly chose to throw aside rages rages rages rages

"Oh, shut up with your self-pitying thoughts, whoever you are. What even is this place? Ugh. Abstract, open to interpretation? Open to corner cutting, more likely."

You open your mouth to speak but no sound comes forth.

"...wow, another mute, too. Full of surprises today, aren't we. Well, there's probably no doubt some grand mystical reason why that is, but I really don't care. This place bores me. Okay, lemme check this for a second."

"Let's seeeee... well, plenty to choose from, but they're all pretty much headed for disaster or thoroughly done in, so... hey, you, you've got more than one voice rattling around in your skull, right? How about you pick me a nice place to visit?"

You stare in utter confusion.

"Yeah, never mind, I thought so. Damn, you don't have much of a personality to you, do you? Generic as they come. Well..."

They flip through the book further.

"According to this, your name is the Adherent and mine was the Aspirant. Well, I like that, actually, pretty fitting really. I'll hold onto that one until I get bored of it. You, though. It does raise some questions, sure! Adherent of what? Were you some sort of religious guard? Are you some sort of divine construct or maybe even a god of sorts? Well, no, you're no god. I'm no god, yet, but I could turn you into a baked good if I felt like it, probably, maybe. I just need to find the other-- wait no I'm not telling you my plan, I'm not stupid! Anyway while I sure do love talking and talking -- sure am having to supply both sides of the conversation as it is anyway -- I do have things that need to get done so I am out. Peace."

They turn to leave, but hesitate and turn back.

"Oh, right, also, on that note, make your peace because I'm going to probably have to end all of existence to do my thing. Sorry. Well, not really, but, a little, I guess?"

And then, they disappear.
And just like that, the world is suddenly a very lonely place.

You feel like you ought to feel some sort of guilt or shame at failing to protect whatever the thing was, but you feel mostly numb and lost.

You are left alone with your thoughts in an empty plane.

[ DISJOINT:> NONEXISTENCE ]

All is everything and everything is all instantaneously, now, forever, in all directions of time and space.

You do not even register this as, on a timescale so fast it is almost meaningless in its bidirectional permenance, your every quark is forced apart by the volume of thing-ness occupying what was once the nothing between the nothing between the vacuum between your quantum foam flecks.

You undergo fundamental dissolution and you cease to be a stable singular consciousness in any meaningful way.

[ DISJOINT:> TIME ]

Everything stops as you sever time from reality like slicing the fat off of an animal's body.

And then, abruptly, you feel only white-hot agony and pain as you look down to several of the Aspirant's hateful tendrils protruding from your chest.

"Yeah, no, nice try buddy, you'll have to be smarter than that. I'm hopping realities already, do you know how easy it is for me to jump back in? Do you know how many layers of protection I have from anything you'd ever be able to pull? I know exactly what I am and where I am. You can't touch me."

The Aspirant blinks a few times, nodding slightly.

"Anyway you pissed me off so I guess that's the end of that. Sweet dreams!"

You slump forward, feeling burning hot and ice cold at the same time, and the darkness comes for you fast.

[ DISJOINT:> OMNIPOTENCE ]

You tear the concept of all-power from this realm.

It doesn't feel like anything changed.

This strikes you as immensely weird, as you seem to have some sort of horrible godlike power now, but no, nothing seems different.

...Then again, if omnipotence was truly omnipotence, it'd probably be immutable by definition, otherwise it wouldn't be omnipotence, right?

This line of thinking makes your head hurt so you just ignore this weird result.

You feel extremely, extremely afraid for some reason, as if something about this is going to be very, very bad for you at some point in the unknown future.

[ DISJOINT:> GOALS ]

You brazenly sever the entire concept of intention and drive from your apparently quite mortal body.

You stand dazed in the featureless plane, bereft of motivation, until you die (again?) of lack of oxygen, not feeling a particular reason to care about the burning pain in your lungs or the abstract goal of staying alive.

You note several things as you undergo the dying process that seem wrong and incorrect but it doesn't particularly bother or phase you, so these observations merely flit through your brain without reflection or further consideration.

[ DISJOINT:> PAGE ]

The page is ripped from itself. The antipage residue object left behind in your hands is white and blue. White paper that feels ghostly and insubstantial, jelly in your hands, and blue symbols that convey no words but convey something to you in a silent voice.

It speaks of worlds, of times, of places that are, were, and never will be. It speaks of a lesser DISJOINTing, a power that displaces and moves its user bodily into these worlds.

You've only used DISJOINT once in your entire life so far, and it already unsettles you what it has done to this page you grabbed. You don't even want to think about what might happen if you used DISJOINT on anything more significant or abstract than a piece of paper. If that's what this was before, anyway.

[ You may now also DISPLACE. To do so, suggest DISPLACE, followed by any single word of your choice. ]
[ DISPLACE is significantly weaker than DISJOINT but vague ambiguous parameters will lead to stranger realms, almost certainly inimical to life. ]

[ Place names are not required, but will produce more predictable outcomes. ]
[ Additional clarification for the place name is permitted. DISPLACE is more lenient than its elder. ]

[ You may continue to DISJOINT, as well. At the same time, if you wish. ]

This will just end everything in a fun new way, as planets and stars are only really held together by the compression of gravity, so all the stars and planets are just going to explode. Though I suppose it wouldn't kill us outright, and we would still have air to breath for a while if this room is airtight, as I suppose 'explode' would probably be too strong a way to describe it, rapidly become ever expanding cloud I suppose might describe it better. And I suppose we don't actualy know if anything else is out there, this room could be all there is here, in which case I guess this can just be fun and fine (unless some of our biological process rely on some sort of consistent force I guess)

[ BRANCH REMOVED ]

2-θ-α-NULL
[ DISPLACE:> Moot Point ]
You remove yourself from this reality and surrender both your power of DISJOINT and DISPLACE as you are thrown bodily into another reality beyond the view of this one.
It appears you have left this zone of creative influence completely, and your fate is no longer bound here.
Do you succeed? Do you fail? Do you end up living a happier life in a different continuity? Do you cease to exist the moment you leave this one? We'll never know.

[ DISJOINT:> STABLE ]
Everything explodes into chaos, predictably. You are a cloud of wafting hydrogen, rapidly decaying into nothing.
[ BRANCH FAILURE:> RETURN TO STABLE POINT ]

2-θ-α-ii
[ DISJOINT:> FAILURE ]
The Aspirant is victorious. So are you. The inherent paradox in multiple contradictory things being true simultaneously in a single branch proves too much to handle and time and space start rapidly oscillating between states until it is no longer clear what is happening anymore. This resolves in femtoseconds. You cannot tell what is going on and your conscious mind splinters so many times your viewpoint is no longer sustainable as a singular entity.
[ BRANCH FAILURE:> RETURN TO STABLE POINT ]

2-θ-α-iii
[ DISJOINT:> LIMITS ]
Nothing binds or separates anything. Energy grows. Space grows. Matter grows. All sensible limits are gone. This feels incredibly similar to ridding non-existence, except your mind has no limit rather than being torn apart. It does not appear to be attached to whatever was your body anymore, and your consciousness expands and consumes and merges with all other thought in the universe, no barriers or limits remaining. You are the Aspirant. You are the Adherent. You are the singularity.
Events no longer bear any relevance or meaning; you are, you were, you always will be. The end.
[ BRANCH FAILURE:> RETURN TO STABLE POINT ]

2-θ-α-vi
[ DISJOINT:> SELF ]
You tear yourself out of reality. You cease to exist instantly.
[ BRANCH FAILURE:> RETURN TO STABLE POINT ]

2-θ-α-v
[ DISPLACE:> SELF ]
Did you know bad things happen when the same thing occupies its own space twice? Did you know, apparently, that DISPLACE works on a strange timescale where you arrive before you leave? You don't know, because you explode horribly as you interpenetrate every single part of your own body.
[ BRANCH FAILURE:> RETURN TO STABLE POINT ]

2-θ-α-vi
[ DISPLACE:> DISPLACE ]
You are stuck in an infinite loop of trying to be where you already are. Your body cannot handle the strain of infinite DISPLACEment and you crumble into dust cell by cell.
[ BRANCH FAILURE:> RETURN TO STABLE POINT ]

2-θ-α-vii
[ DISPLACE:> BRANCH 1-α ]
You are squished infinitely flat against the infinite everything that's already present in this timeline. You then spontaneously explode and join your other self's cosmic dispersal, and amalgamate into their powerless eternal omnipresence. Whoops.

[ DISJOINT:> DISPLACE ]

You tear the concept of DISPLACE from the universe. This, as far as you know, only affects you.

It also means you just immediately undid receiving the new power you just got.

You feel like you hear vaguely avian laughter from across time and space, like some sort of wretched ethereal kookaburra.
"NICE WORK, DUMBASS!!"

You feel incredibly, incredibly foolish. Unfortunately, wanting the earth to swallow you does not actually make it so, and thus you are doomed to continue living on this empty plane for the rest of your life, unless things somehow change.

You still have DISJOINT, after all. Which is, as you have seen from what you just did, disjointing first a physical object and then the power it gave you, probably still safe to use, if you're very careful. Very very careful. What could you do wrong, after all? It's not like the first thing you thought to do with it was destroy the universe or whatever, right?

Nothing seems to have physically changed, but you realise there's some ideas rattling around your head that make less sense and seem incomplete, which you suspect might be related to the fact you just destroyed a cultural concept. You can't really even remember what your culture or history are so this only makes you slightly uneasy instead of giving you an identity crisis. However, soon the idea of what "male" even means starts to slip away. The notion of gender as defined in binary opposition instead of multiple hues and dimensions also collapses entirely, but the remaining palette seems missing something.

You are now some strange gender that is neither female nor null nor sexless, and nowhere in the spectrum those suggest. Something alien. New? Old? What are you?? You feel even more like a weird outsider and outcast than you did before.

The Aspirant appears. You gasp and tense up ready for a confrontation, but it hangs in the air, head tilted.

"...I'm mostly just confused what you were going for, there, really. Probably not this outcome, I'd guess. Here, I actually feel a tiny bit bad for you screwing up this badly, so I'll help you out here because now I'm just really, really curious what this iteration is even heading towards. A trajectory I did not expect, for sure! Want to be the prettiest lady you could ever be? I got you. One second."

You blink in confusion and mild apprehension.

"Okay so I just shut down the branch where you said no, so, ipso facto, welcome to a new you! Have fun doing whatever it is you do in this scenario. My first piece of advice as far you know is get out of this messed up timeline. You can't even begin to comprehend how much damage you've done on a cultural scale. In places that are not featureless voids. Anyway I've got somewhere to be. Well, more accurately, nowhere, really, but... bye!"

The Aspirant vanishes, and you feel a little different. The feeling of strangeness soon passes as, clearly, this is just you, and has always been you.
Still. Now what?

Nothing happens. Well, you appear to have shifted maybe an inch to the right, but on this featureless plane you're not sure if that's not just your brain playing tricks on you. How did you even get here, anyway? You remember being here for years, but you're also a flesh and blood animal who needs to eat and drink, and you don't see any food or water around. It doesn't make any sense. Well, either way, you try an idea that you feel almost like is divine inspiration, because it makes no sense for you to have come up with the idea any other way.

2-θ-δ / 2-ε

Things become a little bit more complicated. You look at an exact copy of yourself, who is much like you in every way except for having made decisions he knows to regret far sooner than you do. He's on the floor, looking sweaty and shaking a little. He looks up at you and yelps, or barks, it's not clear what.
You wave in a friendly manner to your counterpart.

You stand around awkwardly. You put on your friendliest face, but it seems to spook him more. The other Adherent slowly gathers himself together and stands up, and the two of you look at each other in a varying mixture of curiosity and, for him, existential terror.

You decide to mentally designate yourself as the normal Adherent and him as the spooked Adherent, before you realise there's no real need for designations with just two of you. You hold out your arms in a friendly gesture, and he stands there, as if expecting you to attack, but not expecting it enough to be on guard.

Well. Not sure where to go from here, you have a think.

That's weird. Maybe you didn't do it right, but for some reason you don't go anywhere. Oh well! Maybe time to try somewhere else.

[ DISPLACE:> DISJOINT ]

You end up flinging yourself outside the universe, but after the initial terror and shock, you find you're not dead yet. You seem to not be actually outside the universe's laws completely, instead sort of floating outside it with a faint tether to reality still. You can even still breathe somehow, but something instinctually tells you to not think about it too hard.

"...Oh. I thought I blocked DISPLACE from targeting me. That's weird. Mildly troubling, even. Will need to investigate that later. Anyway, kindly fuck off."

You glare at the Aspirant. The Aspirant gives you a triple glare back.

"Look, I'm metastable, you're a thread fraying from a rope, you really, really shouldn't be here. Even I'm only out here for tiny intervals to prevent unravelling completely, I'm just trying to poke around and get a feel for the space, or, uh, the not-space, whatever it is here. Go DISPLACE yourself and we both get what we want."

The Aspirant looks at you and winces. "Okay, because you're exactly that kind of idiot, no, do not DISPLACE yourself into yourself, you'll explode. Somewhere else, though, please. I'm the only thing holding you together right now, because I'm just such a nice guy and because I've already just skewered you and worked off some of my rage. You look confused at the Aspirant, who just sighs and turns away. "No, that's all you're getting out of me this slice. Leave. I need a drink..."

You fizz through spacetime into a timeline that appears to be much like the one you left, except there are somehow dead fish everywhere coating the plane in a layer two feet high.

You cannot begin to fathom what events could have caused this to happen.

You also see what appears to be your face-down corpse, having either drowned or asphyxiated in fish that are starting to decompose.

You are made aware of how empty your stomach is by the fact that the following bout of dry heaving rids you of nothing.
Especially not the smell. The smell. You almost want to die. You know this smell isn't ever going to leave your fur for the rest of your life.

All sound ceases. You feel better already. You see your other self tense in surprise, while the pre-Aspirant figure drops their hands (wings?) to the side, breathing a sigh of relief, before they look confused, alarmed, and you see their beak moving around a lot but nothing is happening. No sound exists anymore.

They look like they're freaking out. You're kind of glad you turned off all sound because you're pretty sure whatever decibels the bird is putting out, you'd be losing your sense of hearing pretty fast anyway.

The other you catches sight of you and also looks like he's about to start panicking.

The bird creature races towards the orb and, for all you can tell, is screaming... something at it, and shaking it violently. You can't make out anything they're screaming about but you get the impression they think the orb is to blame for all the sound disappearing. Possibly. That or they just wanted to break the thing for causing them so much grief already. You're not sure.

You realise you don't have much time. You need to make sure you don't let the orb be broken--

"Ahem."

You turn behind you and see the Aspirant.

"Clever, but, well, let's have a quick chat about multiverse theory." The Aspirant rests on its many tendrils. "See, you could, in fact, prevent my ascension into glory in this timeline. It could work! You probably still even have time to do it, it looks like this iteration of what will become me is actually more just angry in general than angry at the orb specifically. But it's just exactly that. An iteration. Excuse me a moment."

The Aspirant takes a sip from a teacup you didn't see before. "Ahhh. Needed that. Anyway. Unfortunately, preventing my ascension here will not prevent my ascension everywhere, or everywhen, I guess. For better and for worse, I'm an immutable fact now. So are you, in a way, just in a very different way to me. Every branch without a you gets pruned, after all. You've been seeing glimpses, haven't you? Or something is feeding you glimpses. Well, I'm much the same, but my relationship with my patron is a bit different."

Another sip. "Either way, I experience time a little bit... different to you now. You're the warp, I'm the weft. ...you have no idea what that means, do you, you nudist. Honestly, the Filter's the only thing preventing everyone from being subjected to your bits all the time. No, I'm not elaborating on the Filter, the more attention I put on it the likelier it is to start breaking. It's doing its job. Don't worry about it. Really."

The Aspirant hurls the teacup behind them and it shatters into dozens of pieces. "Anyway. You're left with two choices, because this branch doesn't really help either of us out. Either you stay stuck timeshifted behind the rest of the horizon, or you leave this branch. Well, I could also kill you, but honestly I'm just not feeling that right now. Run along and go back to your own timeline, or something. I must be leaving."

The Aspirant turns and somehow walks through reality, their component parts shrinking into nothing as they do so.

Sooo, from what I think I understand…
I think BRANCHES are made from a series of STABLE POINTS, created when an Adherent is alive and able to affect the BRANCH further after doing what he was instructed to.
The parts of the BRANCHES without a viable Adherent at their latest STABLE POINT gets pruned. That’s all the BRANCHES that end with [ BRANCH FAILURE:> RETURN TO STABLE POINT ].
From what we have seen so far a BRANCH splits when either
-several suggestions are made from its last STABLE POINT that lead to viable new STABLE POINTS (as seen in most updates);
-an Adherent from the last STABLE POINT of a BRANCH DISPLACES themselves to a STABLE POINT that is not the last of its BRANCH (as seen in 2-θ-η / 0).
From what we have seen so far two BRANCHES merge when the Adherent from the last STABLE POINT from one goes to the last STABLE POINT of another (like in 2-θ-δ / 2-ε). Or maybe the old BRANCH gets pruned when there no longer is an Adherent inside.

Right now we have the following BRANCHES:

1-θ -> 2-θ-δ / 2-ε (no omnipotence)
1-ε -> 2-θ-δ / 2-ε (no omnipotence), where omnipotence does not existed and things are apparently very, very bad. Population : Normal Adherent and Spooked Adherent who only knows DISJOINT;
1-θ -> 2-θ-β (no displace), where DISPLACE does not exist. Population : Adherent-2-θ-β (Dumbass Adherent?) who learned both DISJOINT and DISPLACE but can’t know or use DISPLACE right now because it does not exist in this branch.
1-θ -> 2-θ-γ (no masculinity), where masculinity does not exist. Population : Lady Adherent;
1-θ -> 2-θ-ε / 2-θ-δi (loop), it went nowhere then back to 1-θ after Normal Adherent left for the no omnipotence branch, continuing from when he left and usurping the branch. Population : Adherent-2-θ-ε.
1-θ -> 2-θ-ζ (fishworld), there is a dead adherent and so much dead fish. Population : fish-smell Adherent;
1-θ -> 2-θ-η / 0 (soundless), where the breaking of the orb has been averted so far, and sound doesn’t exist. Population : Adherent-2-θ-η , Adherent /0 who don’t know DISJOINT or DISPLACE and angry Aspirant who has not ascended yet.

BRANCH 2-θ-ζ : before doing anything else take a dead fish with you because you might get the opportunity to slap Aspirant with it at some point
