It’s done. No going back, now. I’ve committed to either the best or worst decision of my life.

I can feel my mind burning from the inside out, like paper held above a candle, leaving only ashes and half-legible fragments of a life behind.

It can’t really be called forgetting, can it? You can’t be forced to forget, not really. So what should this be called? Two words come to mind: theft and payment.

Already, it’s all but over. I’ve lost so much knowledge of my context, purpose, even my identity.

I grasp for any understanding. Where am I? The answer comes to me, thankfully. I’m in an alley, in some small Wild Town, in the dead of night. The rest… is gone.

This was my choice, right? I think it was. It’s slipping away, even as the fire dies down. Was it worth it, for you? And you…. who are you, that I’m talking to right now? I can’t remember that, either.

Is anyone there?

No.
You've got mail!

We're here. And just like you, we're confused, but unlike you, we're disembodied voices.

I guess the only answers we can get is in that envelope in your left hand, which I assume you wrote to yourself... If you forgot how to read along with your other memories, we'll read it for you.

>No.
>No one here but us chickens
>We're here. And just like you, we're confused, but unlike you, we're disembodied voices.

Oh. Oh! There’s really someone there! And you say you’re disembodied chickens? Strange. When you speak, it sounds like my own thoughts, just sizzling a little bit around the edges.

It’s probably not a great idea to befriend spooky voices whispering in my head, but I’m left with precious little to go on at the moment. I guess I’ll rely on you to help guide me and provide some measure of companionship.

>You got anything to defend yourself?

I don’t appear to have anything on me except for my clothes. Thankfully, I appear to be alone here, at least for the moment.

>I guess the only answers we can get is in that envelope in your left hand, which I assume you wrote to yourself... If you forgot how to read along with your other memories, we'll read it for you.
>You’ve got mail!

Ah! Yes, there does also seem to be a letter in my hand. Vaguely familiar. I open the envelope and pull out the wrinkled note inside.

Oh no. It looks like it’s been dunked in water or something. Half the ink is smudged beyond recognition, and the handwriting is squiggly and fast on top of that.

My eyes ache like nothing else. At least I can still read, though it’s difficult to focus clearly on the words.

I - - - this secretly, quickly. Nymedran - - -. No time.

Your twin - - -, captured. Liriet. Find - - -, bring - - - home. - - - Alchemist Priar.

Seek Alchemists, but don’t - - - them. They will - - - you, lead you to - - -. Liriet is - - -. Blend in. Find Zeschel. Make whatever - - - you can.

Your name is - - -, and this was - - - choice. Good luck.

This is hopeless! I can barely piece it together, and even then all these names and terms are a mystery to me. Nymedran? Alchemist? Even my own name is smudged! What am I supposed to call myself?

That's because your eyes are scrambled eggs. You're thinking about chickens too much.
Call yourself Ovid.

Smudge isn't the best name, but might as well.

So. You have a twin, that much we know. Someone who looks just like you.

Liriet is likely a city or town or a location. Let's try to find our way there.

Of course, to do that, we need to know where HERE is, first.

Also we aren't chickens. We just constantly make jokes to stave off the boredom of being stuck inside people's heads with little else to do. We're more...spirits of guidance-slash-agents of personal change.

>Call yourself Smudge
>Smudge does sound like a pretty cool name for now.

Oh, that sounds nice enough. Certainly! From now on, I suppose I am Smudge. Thank you, mysterious ghostly chicken friends.

>Smudge isn't the best name, but might as well.

Don’t be so critical, avian comrades! Smudge is a perfectly fine name. I think.

>You're thinking about chickens too much.

You’re my only friends! Don’t put yourself down like that. Of course I’ll spend a lot of time thinking of you.

>Your eyes are scrambled eggs.

Huh? Oh, uh, haha! Good one. That was a joke, right? After all, I have perfectly normal human eyes. Itchy and achey they may be, they are still just eyes, yes?

Don’t make too many jokes at my expense, now. I’m recently amnesiac, spending time in a dark alley at night, and only have bodiless mind-chickens for friends. I’m not entirely certain, but I think I’m probably in a particularly vulnerable place in my life. I could use guidance and honesty right now, and I think I’ve lost most of my sense of humor to whatever burned the memories out of me.

>We aren't chickens. We just constantly make jokes to stave off the boredom of being stuck inside people's heads with little else to do.

You’re not? Oh dear. Is this another complex form of joke? I know very few things, but at least I’m aware of your chicken status. If even that’s wrong, it’ll shake the foundations of my admittedly quite limited understanding of the universe.

>So. You have a twin, that much we know. Someone who looks just like you.

Excellent! That would be very helpful information, if only I knew what I looked like.

>Liriet is likely a city or town or a location. Let's try to find our way there. Of course, to do that, we need to know where HERE is, first.

Unfortunately, all I can tell you is that this is a Wild Town. And no, I don’t remember what that means either. Should I try to leave the alley and go exploring?

...Also, you were joking, right? About my eyes?

Well, you'll need a mirror or a stranger for a second opinion. if there aren't any puddles of water nearby, get out of the alley and find one or the other.

>Your eyes are very beautiful.

Why, thank you, my fine possibly-feathered friend!

>That said, I wouldn't call them typical, unless bioluminescence is a common trait?

You mean to say that my eyes are glowing? But how?

>Your eyes are like, made of fire.

Excuse me, what?

My eyes are on fire?!

>You might want to find a mirror.
>Well, you'll need a mirror or a stranger for a second opinion. if there aren't any puddles of water nearby, get out of the alley and find one or the other.

Yes, absolutely! I’m leaving this alley immediately and finding out whether or not my eyes are on fire! Not that I distrust you, it just seems impossible!

No sooner have I left the alley than I’ve run into a person! I should ask them about my potentially burning eyes situation.

“Excuse me, fine person, would you happen to know if my eyes–?” I begin.

But before I can finish speaking, the stranger starts shrieking. “Nymedra!” they scream. “Guards! Guards! Nymedra!” Over and over, those two words. One of them, I understand – guards. But what does ’Nymedra’ mean?

The stranger flees at top speed, before I have a chance to ask questions. I’ve been left alone on the street! Ah, not counting you, of course. Sorry. I think I’ll ask for your help next time I have a social interaction. I can only imagine the amnesia’s left my conversational skills in tatters.

For the moment, however, I’m a bit nonplussed. Where should I go now? I don’t know where to find a mirror, and all that ‘guards’ business has me on edge. Plus, I’m getting cold out here.

So, what now? Any ideas?

You're going to want to flee the immediate area so as not to be detained by guards, and find something to cover your eyes. Maybe your hair too, since there are glints in it like stars.

Okay yeah, the way he was talking, we're (supposedly) something to be feared. I doubt that's actually the case, but superstition is a powerful thing.

Time to abscond in a direction away from your current location. And by that I mean run and get the heck out of this town.

No. 1034474 ID: dee951

By context, Nymedra is some sort of named status of person/being, which invokes inherent, immediate fear/terror responses in people like that person. This does not bode well, but more information is needed. You don't want the guards to apprehend you; you cannot trust the local law to have your best interests at heart at this juncture. Time to flee the scene.

>Nymedra? Why, that's what you are. The letter said so.

What? No, that can’t be right. I’m human. Unless you can be both human and ‘Nymedra’ at the same time? I don’t know. I’ve forgotten pretty much everything, but I’m pretty sure about my humanity, at least.

Then again, I’m still not entirely sure whether you’re chickens or not, or the status of my eyes when it comes to being on fire, and I don’t actually know what a Nymedra is, so maybe I’m not the best judge.

>Find something to cover your eyes. Maybe your hair too, since there are glints in it like stars.

I did notice the glittering stars in my hair, but I wasn’t sure whether that was normal or not. Anyway, I don’t have anything on hand to cover my head, except maybe my shirt, but I do need to be able to see, and I’d prefer not to be any colder than I already am. I’m liable to get sick!

Alright, sounds good! Into the unknown, I suppose. I just pick a direction and start moving as fast as I can.

>You're not welcome in these parts. Perhaps you should just leave town.
>And by that I mean run and get the heck out of this town.

I’ll do my best! I don’t really know the geography around here, though. I’ll just keep moving in the same direction, for now. Eventually I’ll end up outside of the town, right?

>Oh, and if you find an alchemist's shop on the way then you should stop there.

I’m not seeing any of those as I go, but then again, I might just be incapable of recognizing them.

>Sounds like we need to track down a saloon

That type of establishment I do recognize, strangely enough! I am passing by one at the moment. Unlike most places, it appears to still be open, based on the sounds inside. Should I go in?
>>
No. 1034514 ID: 899c9f

Absolutely. You should have something to drink before you go wandering in the wilderness.
>>
No. 1034522 ID: 96c896

No. There will be people inside, who will all freak out upon seeing you.
...well, if you're confident in how fast you can run away you could try it, just in case you're able to talk to someone before you get mobbed...? It seems very dangerous to me though.

1. My read of the situation is that you used Nymedran magic of some kind, exchanging your memories and possibly something else for...power, perhaps? Oh, and us, I guess. And it comes with visible side effects, which are in some way taboo or "enemy". Your eyes are on fire and there are sparkles in your hair. My guess is you look like a Nymedra. Perhaps with luck it'll go away after a while - but I wouldn't count on it.
2. You probably shouldn't go in the saloon. On the other hand, you probably gotta go SOMEWHERE...but yeah,
>>1034522
if you go in, at least make sure you have a clear path of escape, and are confident you can run away. I'd prefer continuing to look for an alchemists' place, though. Or leaving town, ideally snagging some fabric on the way out if you can. Once day dawns, it should be easier to e.g. drape a fabric over a hat, and see out but not be seen. The fire eyes complicate this at night.
3. To my knowledge, none of us are chickens. Sorry. However, be comforted in that most of us will speak truly and try to help you.
